Falling into the Division trap

Bungie is rapidly falling into Ubisoft’s “Division” series trap. Taking the enjoyment out of the regular grind of the game in exchange for difficulty. Said difficulty is just throw a ton of enemies at you with some powerful bullet sponges thrown in and ships/turrets that have crazy tracking projectiles that can wipe you out in no time. I’m glad Bungie listened to the streamers and people who play the game so much that they are already max power after the first week or so and kept the game interesting and fun for them. For the casual player it is just giving more reason to regret buying Lightfall and no reason to buy The Final Shape.

    Agreed. Fortunately, Bungie is far quicker to walk back their mistakes. That first year, Massive dug their heels in and defended their mistakes right up to the brink. I still remember one of their CMs losing it online and going on this firehouse rant. Lecturing people about their game design philosophy and how (the hated) Dark Zone was so important to it. (Sadly, I think they fired him for it.) I remember thinking: A. If you have to lecture people about what your “design philosophy” is, you are losing (and arguably lost) as a developer. B. NO ONE CARES. No one cares what your philosophy is if the end result is a broken game that is unenjoyable to play. Fortunately, Massive came to their senses in time. The later admitted that the made the horrible mistake of tuning the game around the most powerful, perfected builds in the game. Which made the game unenjoyable/unplayable for everyone else. I think Bungie made a similar mistake. I think the tuned the game around exotic primaries and the strongest builds…and the result is a game that feels like you’re armed with a pea-shooter if you’re running anything else…. …while you’re getting hit with sledgehammers. Big mistake….again.
