Bungie, please don't listen to the PvP streamer gods' whining about skill based matchmaking

Those PvP streamers who are complaining about SBMM are whining because with it, they can't jump into a quick play map and easily own it and then post videos about how dominant they are against players, like me, who are far less skilled at PvP. I've seen many videos where they claim that's not the case. That's BS. Awhile back I saw one of these PvP gods showing a pre SBMM quick play match where he went something like 50-0 and got some super rare medal for it. Would he have been able to do that if the players he was up against were at or near his same level? Not an efffin chance. There was another vid from a PvP god showing his first match with Vex Mythoclast where he shredded the opposing team and got nearly 50 kills. Would he have been able to do that against players at or near his skill level? Not an effin chance. No effin way. For players like that, connection base matchmaking is a little like me dropping down to the Cosmodrome to farm kills to get a deepsight weapon done. Practically everything is a one shot kill. That's what the PvP god streamers want from quickplay. They want to own the map against far less skilled players than they are. They don't want to work for their kills. They just want to dominate with ease. When SBMM was changed to connection based MM, half the matches were mercied and there was almost always one or two players who were way better than everyone else who would routinely finish with 40+ kills. Everyone else on the map was just cannon fodder. That may be great for that one guy, but hardly fun for everyone else. SBMM has its problems, sure. Creating Crucible is like herding cats, an always chaotic work in progress. But even with SBMM's problems, it's working and I'm playing Crucible again and I can hold my own with the other players on it who are at or near my skill level. Matches are finishing closer. They're not being mercied anywhere near as often. I'm having fun in Crucible again. I hated the connection MM Crucible where all I was was cannon fodder for PvP junkies. Streamers speak with much louder voices than we do. Their whines get noticed by the devs more than the average players. They have more influence. This whining about SBMM from streamers is likely being heard by you, Bungie. You get rid of it, I'll be done with Crucible again. I'm not at all interested in being a bullet sponge for some streamer who wants to own every quick play map and make videos about how effing wonderful they are. And fine, troll me if ya want with some insipid "git gud" BS. I don't give a rat's a__.

  • So… it’s clear that the answer is somewhere in the middle. By no means am I a PvP God, but I’m on the higher side of average. The problems that I’ve been experiencing with SBMM significantly affect my enjoyment of the crucible. For starters, lag in matches has increased significantly. Iron Banner was almost unplayable last week because every match had people shooting through walls, teleporting everywhere, and not taking damage. It almost doesn’t matter what skill level someone is if they are lagging so much that you can’t have a gunfight with them. On the other hand, lower skill players need an environment in which they can learn the mechanics of the game without being punished by those of us who have been playing since launch. They need an environment where they can find the effective range of weapons and how to juggle weapons and abilities. They need to be able to do so without someone constantly pushing them in their grill. Also, there are other performance metrics that matter beyond KDA. It’s clear that Bungie’s SBMM matchmaking is based on KDA, with an ideal KDA of 1.0, and averaging players on a team so that the entire team gets as close to 1.0 as possible. All of these things cause problems. It seems to me that the best answer is what True Vanguard has been proposing for over a year: CBMM first, with outlier protection so that lower level players never match against high level players. This, of course, should only be for Quickplay. Quickplay should be a casual environment where everyone can have fun and experiment with new weapons and load outs. Ranked play and Trials should absolutely prioritize SBMM first and foremost, so that the people who want to sweat actually have to sweat.

Bungie has listened to you 1.03 kd players and you’ve had it your way for a few seasons now and it’s not working it’s killing pvp in turn killing the game numbers They’ve admitted it’s not working and keep “loosening” sbmm Eventually it shall be gone I mean you’ve played less then 25 6v6 casual modes games this season why should the game cater to casuals getting their 3 games for a pinnacle compared to the pvp mains putting 1000+ kills in a week…..??
You get rid of it, I'll be done with Crucible again. I'm not at all interested in being a bullet sponge for some streamer
I'm not a streamer, just a PvP main, but I will say this: To be honest, IMO, that's the way it should be. If you're a casual who dips in and out of PvP for the pinnacles/some casual matches, unwilling to put in the time to 'Git Gud', to go up against better players in an attempt at improving, thus don't enjoy crucible, then thats totally fine and your prerogative, but you're not the demographic to cater for. The vilification of 'streamers' and PvP mains is very prevalent on this forum, though. I don't want to 'stomp' people. I predominently play solo in Quickplay and just want to play matches that favour connection quality and reasonably balanced teams (Read: not going up against 6 stacks from different contintents as 6 solo's). In an ideal world, we'd have two modes for Quickplay, one that favours SBMM and one that favours CBMM, but the numbers just arent there. Bungie, to their credit, have tried to entice more people to play PvP recently but the numbers prove they just can't retain a healthy playerbase without PvP mains. No hate you, man. I wish we could all have fun in both PvE & PvP.

For the most part, last week IB was pretty good, the odd bs, but I get that any way. Worst time of PVP for me was when Quickplay was CBMM only. I will use the words of a player who posted a comment during this time, it was something along the lines of: "quickplay is pretty much a coin toss, a lucky wheel, whether you win or lose at the moment". There are people who say CBMM is better, and others that say SBMM is better. Personally, I prefer SBMM over CBMM, mainly because I don't need to "sweat" as much if at all and the matches seem fairer somewhat. Others have stated that with SBMM they are against sweats or people from the other side of the world, but that is what SBMM does, it matches you with players of similar stats, you just so happen to play differently, or got lucky during matchmaking where you didn't need to "sweat" or "be meta". If you have a 2kd, you will face against other 2kd's... Players will always complain about something. the top% complain about SBMM because the games become too hard for them and because they are matched against similar stat players and they can't handle that. other players complain about CBMM, especially around the time when it was essentially a lucky wheel whether you lost or won, at that time I just rarely played PVP, and now it's somewhat better compared to how it was... We can agree to disagree, you have your opinion and problems, so do I, who doesn't. But we can all agree on the following: the connection type of peer-to-peer doesn't help matchmaking Servers need updating or improving, possibly regional Servers And Better match balance would help too I could name more, but I hope you get the idea... Personally, a toggle setting for matchmaking type would cater to both sides of the argument, but other improvements would be needed, some like the match balancing especially... I'll leave it at that, argue if you want, I don't care, this is my pennies worth, but you're more than welcome to form your own opinions just as much as I am.

          • I had the best time in pvp this IB, by far. I even did 2 resets of it, which I've never imagined doing. Last IB I didn't play at all, cause without sbmm it was pointless. I'm pve main.

They aren't complaining that they can't make videos of them stomping people. The game is just unplayable. 5+ minute waits for a game that's so laggy it's impossible to be the "fair" game Bungie want it to be isn't fun. Dedicated players keep the game alive, kick them in the teeth and the game will start to die cause casuals won't keep it alive.

              • I am ready to announce the new Senior VP of Community Managers. He’s sitting right in these forums. It’s me! I will be breaking down the wall in the corner Bellevue office to create one gigantic office and I will only be taking 85% of the additional salary owed to me. That’s self sacrifice, people.

                  • Bungie has never lissen to streamers about sbmm or cbmm don’t wrry. The reason and sole reason they remove or implement sbmm are player numbers. It’s simple with sbmm implemented your hoping is to gain new players into the pvp community but at the point where sbmm is costing the avrg player to leave 0.8/1.5 kd players because they will only face equal skill or better makes them leave. A mis understanding that the top 1% don’t want sbmm is such a mis understanding because that top 1%are those players for a reason they -blam!- on everybody no matter the skill. So sbmm doesn’t bother them as much as the avrg player. So when the players base start canabalize it self we will get cbmm back to maybe hold some of the new players gained during the sbmm fase.. and so the cycle go’s round and round. This all to keep the revenue up and the playerbase somewhat happy so enjoy now. So long it last

                    • Well… If Bungies new competitive IP works out, I’m sure most of the destiny streamers and players in the upper skill bracket will move on from destiny 2 and play the new game instead. Might not ever have to worry about content creator influence in destiny ever again…

                    • Literally both sides of this argument are wanting more chill games while depicting the other side as absolute unforgivable terrible people because they....also want more chill games. Bro just give us the option like we had in the halo days to pick for ourselves we could literally switch our matchmaking preference from open (any skill level, connection being the priority), balanced (c'mon mate you don't need me to explain that one), and strict (SBMM only). If it could be done all the way back then with far more limited technology why can't we have that now?

                      • SBMM has completely destroyed any chance of me being able to play crucible with my friends that are at a lower skill level. If we try to play pvp together they just get frustrated and either go play on their own or go play something else. That’s not a good thing. Oh, and stop with the “you just want easier matches” bogus. Y’all literally asked for SBMM just to get easier matches. The irony.

                        • I think that the real problem is Bungie, they don't want to put in the work to make the game bettet, so they are grasping at straws trying to satisfy a small group here and a small group there, while most likely upsetting the other majorities in the process.

                          • SBMM is a smart move by Bungie. PvP mains will whine and complain, but they won't leave the game over it. Meanwhile, those blueberries that used to avoid the mode will be more inclined to play it since the crucible is now actually enjoyable for them when they aren't being stomped every game. This is a win-win situation for everyone.
