If SBMM, CBMM and GBMM Are To Be Successful, Bungie Would Need Dedicated Server/Client Crucible Servers

I wrote up a post about what kind of architecture is in place for Crucible today. I also explain in there why it's likely we're not going to see it (alongside some other user's comments about another developed game). Skill-Based Matchmaking and Dedicated Servers As has been rightly pointed out by others and myself, connection issues can translate to bad game experiences. This does directly impact skill measurements, as player reaction times are hindered immensely with things like kill exchanges and exacerbated peeker's advantage (also explained in my post). This translates to skewed or outright incorrect gauges of player skill. A dedicated server would help skew these things in favor of a more balanced experience. Connection-based Matchmaking and Dedicated Servers In cases where a team may be gathered with members across the ocean, the connection will typically favor the player whom the team initially joined upon (not the person who is currently the team leader). Between this and the use of VPNs, connection-based matchmaking would become nearly impossible to figure as a factor when balanced with SBMM. With other games that use a dedicated server setup, the game will either: - Default to a server region that is best for all players involved, or, - Allow the leader or group to choose a region, which may be at the expense of an outlying player located much further away International communities have become more prevalent across all gaming mediums over the last twenty years. CBMM either becomes a non-factor in figuring out the balanced equation for these groups, or will cause extremely long load times. A dedicated server setup would help negate this entirely, and in certain competition brackets, place a ping limit on the players. Group-based Matchmaking and Dedicated Servers Group based matchmaking becomes a bit easier to figure and balance when the aforementioned items are squared away. Why We Probably Won't Get Dedicated Servers I'll copy and paste what I wrote from my linked post:
I cannot speak to the complexity of the game engine powering Destiny 2, but I can guess that implementing the architecture and then recoding the game would be a next-level effort-- probably one warranted with releasing another iteration of the game with other improvements. It's not typically a matter of just toggling an option on, adding some dns entries so the game knows where to look, and BAM! you have dedicated servers. However, something that Bungie could look at is simply increasing the tick rate to 60. Given that most of its audience is on next-gen consoles or more recent PCs, and prior-gen consoles were capable of supporting 60 ticks in other games, it's very feasible to test out a 60 tick rate configuration in PvP. But again, I don't know the engine or its limits, but given that it also powers various Halo games, I don't think it's that hard of a reach.
In addition, given that Bungie is working on another game (I have a really bad feeling about it for some reason), I don't think it'll be prioritized anytime soon. And it's a shame, because the PvP in Destiny has the opportunity to be really good. ...not that it'd keep you all from complaining on the forums about it in some fashion. ;)
