Dear Bungie Destiny 2 Team,
My name is Owen Campbell and for the better part of the Witch Queen campaign and back in the latter half of Beyond Light I've been playing Destiny 2 and have experienced many things with the game. From the raids and dungeons to PVP content with the likes of trials to which I'm hopelessly bad at. I've dipped my toes in the water for destiny's content and its features. From first starting on console to moving to computer I have been on both platforms and see both sides of PC and console play. But there has always been a gripe I've had with the game and one in particular which can come in the form of accessibility to which the Bungie dev team has been working for and towards for a good while now and is constantly improving.
The feature which has rubbed me the wrong way is the fact that certain mods for armor are not easily obtainable, which in particular are the specialty class mods that Ada 1 sells. These mods are the key building blocks on which build crafting gets cranked up to their max potential and see their synergy sky rocket. It's very convenient early into destiny when after having no other place to spend glimmer other than raid banners and on mods from Ada 1. But the problem here is that the mods which player want and what I want are in a rotation. These mods are random if not set to any particular mod, only being sold once every few months as I don't know the exact timing these mods are sold.
The method I've had to result with is waiting and checking my Destiny 2 Companion app to see if Ada 1’s selling the goods on any particular day. This has been a partial routine since I don't have access to the gaming center to which I can login to destiny and purchase the mod I want; to which I missed out on Bountiful Wells which I haven’t had for the season of the haunted and haven’t gotten since starting nearly last year. I had to stare at my phone on the Companion app while watching that Ada was selling both Bountiful Wells and Elemental Time Dilation, two mods I didn't have and wanted for armor builds. A fix to this could be to make it possible to buy these mods on phone giving players an alternative way to purchase these mods so that they never miss out on a drop for Ada 1. But that to me still feels like possibly the easiest fix possible as I'm not a game dev and don't know what work would be necessary to facilitate such a change. Even then I don't think that addresses the main issue here, and that's the fact that rotating mods is a problem for accessibility in my view. Rotating mods again from the perspective of a player and not a game dev, I don't see a reason other than for possible balancing purposes or just in old design concepts that were implemented into the game far back and havent been changed since.
The idea I would propose is to create a buy screen like for Ikora Rey for buying sub class 3.0 fragments. This would give enough space to display all the mods neatly and would have players spending their glimmer here to improve their armor builds and allowing players direct access to builds that would otherwise be gatekeeping by daily rotation of mods they may never use or want. This change could be introduced in Lightfall where new armor mods will probably be added like strand resistance or similar mods. By no means is this mandatory but this feels to me a similar experience that most new light players feel and this change can be brought in tangent with other accessibility changes like full auto retrofit being overhauled and the perk itself. If you have read this far into my letter I do feel like this change or a similar one could have a beneficial effect for the game and the community but what do I know.
Anyways, thank you so much for creating a game which keeps me coming back for more every single time.
Sincerely
Owen Campbell
