Nope. Darkness was intrinsic to his being. When he took himself, he basically lost his soul. Ghosts can't revive without a soul as seen in the Thorn lore.

  • Oryx didn’t Take himself. What he’s doing there is extracting the power from Willbreaker before he retreats to his Throne World.

Any chance you could elaborate on that? I was always under the impression that he was using his Taken powers on himself, but that it had a different reaction on him than normal creatures, similar to what happened to Riven.

You’ll notice how Riven still has noticeable Taken features during the raid while Oryx does not. Hive Swords act similar to Hive Worms in the fact that they grow stronger the more you kill. Oryx’s sword Willbreaker had amassed millennia worth of killing power by the time we killed him in Regicide. He extracts this power from the blade at this point, which is why it crumbles when Eris Morn touches it in the next cutscene. The main source of confusion around this fact is that the cutscene decided to use a Taken like effect for both the power from the sword as well as for when Oryx crumbles away. In reality, all he is doing is retreating. Which makes even more sense given the discoveries made by Savathûn revolving around the power to Take and the ability of the Witness to move worlds.

  • Huh, the more you know. So, does that mean at the end of the Regicide mission, he was retreating to his Throne World then? I was under the impression that he inverted it in its entirety to be inside his Dreadnaught, but at the way that he claws away at his chest as it begins to flake and rip off, I’m not sure if there was anywhere left for him to go to.

  • He just went into a restricted section in his ship. One of those places you can only access with ascendant energy.

  • His Throne World is within his Dreadnought but it’s not the entirety of his Dreadnought. If that makes sense to you. It occupies physical space within, using the ship as a defensive shell, but it doesn’t take up the entirety of the massive physical structure.

  • True, but in layman's terms it is very similar.

  • Nope, not really. The only similarity is the actual visual effect used.

  • Well he's utilizing the sword logic to empower himself.

  • He’s not empowering himself though. He’s draining his sword so that it’s power cannot be used by his killers. If Oryx took himself, he would’ve compromised his own will and made himself into something lesser. Not to mention an empowerment wasn’t necessary when he was already the lord of his domain. Hell, he’s entirely immune to damage for his boss encounter during Kings Fall. The only reason we beat him was thanks to his own hubris of gathering corrupted light for sacrifice during our incursion.

  • So does my point still stand now that this is cleared up? Given the collection of the body and the essence from touch of malice would a ghost revival be possible in theory?

In theory it might be, but is it plausible? No way in hell. It serves no real purpose in the story, does nothing for the character and would just be ridiculous. Same way Cayde won’t be resurrected, the characters death has had too big an impact on the universe. Undoing it for whatever reason would cheapen that.

  • I agree, while I think the imagery would be cool it would take away from his arc and overall story impact, I was just wondering if the possibility was there in current law
