Can't decide on my Zombie Barbarians weapon for new D&D game

Character stuff further down, but the main point of the post is I'm indecisive on what to do weapon wise. I'm planning to go Zealot Barbarian for extra immortality. We get a free feat at 1st lvl cuz DMs a bro. Party comp as far as I know: Tiefling Bard Halfling Artificer Wood Elf Ranger And me the Zombarian Big Weapon mean big damage. It meta cuz Great Weapon Master broken. I don't hate the idea of carrying a sword nearly as big as I am. Dual Wielding is kinda trash, but I really like the image in my head of a sword in one hand and an axe in the other. Also +1 armor I guess. Then there's Sword and Board, which is a shield for those who don't speak nerd. Less damage but more armor which could be useful in such a squishy party, and it kinda looks like I'm gonna be alone in melee. OR! Polearm Master! STICK! Opportunity Attacks when they approach, and a BONK as a bonus action! Either Big Stick two hander or Spear and Shield Sparta Special. Idk, hence poll. Gimme thoughts. I have a hard time playing what I want over what I feel the party needs. Now other bits. A friend is going to try his hand at DMing, starting with the Mines of Phanypacks or whatever then maybe moving on to other things. I'm going to be playing a Barbarian using the Undead Reborn race thingy. You're probably picturing some Draugr from Skyrim. Nah, I'm going Pet Sematary with it. My characters name is Eleanor "Ellie" Graves. She's a 20 something going on 63 year old, 5 foot 3, mousey farmgirl. Thin and pale with bland brown hair and light blue eyes with milky pupils. She got crushed by a runaway wagon and the village-grave-digger/grandpa engaged in a mild amount of demonic dealings and necromancy. Ellie came back wrong and a bit deadlike, some backstory stuff I haven't decided upon happened, and now she's a traveling mercenary. I'm not telling the others any of that though. As far as the other players will be concerned she's a bit grim and sickly, but an otherwise unremarkable Normal Human Woman.

  • Better get started on your next character as undead can’t be healed by conventional spells or health pots. But if a DM will allow a feat at level 1, then it’s sounds like he’ll bend that rule for you too.

an undead barbarian probably doesn’t have the mental capacity to actually wield anything other than a stick

        • From the faraway land of New Guinea, I give you...the pineapple club! I'd go primitive; stick, flint spear, stone club/axe,

The trouble with sharp pointy things is that they can only really pierce and cut. When I’m a barbarian I like smashing things so I tend to go down the warhammer route, or like a flail or something. Better for ‘unlocking’ doors and chests as well.

Spear. Then homebrew it as a pitchfork. Or a scythe. Or dual wield a sickle and... Iunno, an axe. Or makeshift katars! Or something from your tombstone. If you want to be practical, though, sword and board is too good to pass up. Our 2h barb had the AC of rice paper.

Thin, pale, mousy, farm-girl, crushed by a wagon then turned undead adventurer. Weapon ideas: 2 hand scythes chained together 1 full size scythe scythes are farm tools, and represent death/reaping/harvest. Appropriate on both levels. Polearm: a modified old farm tool- one end a rake, one end a shovel. Or anything else you want to come up with. Depending on your DM, you can use one end for impale, the other end for bashing damage. Maybe the shovel that was used to dig her grave can be a polearm. Again, depending on how creative your DM lets you be… a chain with a lantern attached to it. The lantern glows an eerie green or a mysterious blue… however you want it to look. The lantern is attached to the chain, which runs and connects to the zombie’s heart. The lantern is a component of the necromancer’s spell, and will stay lit as long as the zombie remains animated. For game purposes, it doesn’t add any major weakness or benefit or anything, like the flame cannot be doused or put out normally.. it just acts as a morning star for weapon classification purposes. Depending on the DM, it can be too dim to act as a light source… or maybe the flame is black and doesn’t give off light, if the DM is a stickler about torches and dungeon visibility mechanics. Shield idea: Using the wheel of the cart that ran her over as a shield. But basically I’m thinking “unremarkable human woman” that just looks a bit sickly… so it would be cool to be carrying something in that theme…. totally mundane like a farm tool or something that is hardened to be a viable weapon through its magical connection to the character. She shows up and it’s like “who’s this sickly girl carrying a shovel?” And then she kicks A with it lol.

                • Become the root of your enemies problems. Take a great club from a dying tree by just using the tree! You could even possibly strap a handle to it in case you ever need a shield. Or perhaps use farming equipment, as the character was a farmer. Like scythes or military forks.
