II: A Dilemma Worth Mentioning - A D2 Short Story

Rys With a groan and a sniff, Rys slowly opens his eyes and lifts his head. He is hanging on the wall by glowing red chains, his feet hover a few inches off the ground. He tastes blood in his mouth. No problem, he thinks. He’ll just summon a sword of fire or nova bomb to get out. But then he remembers: there is no more Light. The Traveler was caged. With that realization, his spirits sink as the tall doors ahead of him open to make way for a Cabal brute. “You’re the only Guardian we’ve captured so far,” he snarls with a growing smile. “But you won’t be the last.” “This beginning only marks the start of a downward spiral toward your end,” Rys retorts quietly, without looking at the soldier. “I hope I can see the end of the story – when all Cabal are so beaten that they will be on their knees for mercy.” “Giving mercy is honorable,” the Cabal admits, “but begging for it is not. I will dishonor you here, in your own city. I will enjoy this.” Now Rys looks up, his face set like a stone. “I've trained with some of the best Warlocks in the galaxy. I’ve strengthened myself alongside allies of equal will. I’ve become a master after being a student. Bring your dishonor. Bring your torture. Weep when it fails.” The Cabal only smiles wider. “I was like you once. Then I was broken. It will be the same for you.” Tetra “Tetra.” The voice is vaguely familiar, but the Huntress can’t place her finger on it. It’s annoying. “Tetra.” It’s a male voice. She can almost see his face in her mind's eye. Flapping robes, a blurred but serious expression. “Tetra.” So close… “-RA, IF YOU DON’T OPEN YOUR EYES RIGHT NOW, I SWEAR ON MY EYE I WILL PUT MANGOS IN ALL OF YOUR MEALS!” Tetra gasps, sits up, and punches her Ghost in the face. “Ow,” Trinity whines. “Solid right, though.” “Where are we?” “Still the Last City. Same place we were when THE WORLD ENDED. Traveler's all locked up, I feel NO Light whatsoever, and your boyfriend’s a'missing. It’s been a great day so far!” Tetra frowns. “I don’t have a boyfriend.” “GIRL, IF YOU DON’T –“ The Ghost pauses and stares into her Guardian’s face. “Oh,” she says weakly. “You…don’t actually remember, do you?” “Trinity, now is not the time to play games.” “Rysedian Buern. Does that name mean anything to you?” “No,” the Huntress replies as she rises, brushing off the dust and dirt from her cloak. “Oh no.” Trinity weaves back and forth as if pacing. “This is bad. Really, REALLY bad. I mean, I hate the guy, but you can’t live without him.” “I can handle myself, Trinity.” “Boy, that rock you hit must’ve REALLY messed you up. You can hardly do a lick of anything without Rys’ help. Or is it the other way around? Never mind. We need to find him soon. I know it sounds crazy,” Trinity adds when Tetra shoots her a raised eyebrow, “but you have to trust me on this. My guess is he’s been captured. Probably being tortured.” Tetra simply gazes at her Ghost. “What else do you remember before today?” “Not much. Bits and pieces.” “Rys can help restore your memories!” Trinity says quickly. “If you help him get out of whatever pickle he’s in, he’ll help you remember. Promise.” “How can you be sure?” Trinity regards Tetra with a solemn expression. “I'd bet my shell on it.” “Fine. Ping his Ghost.” Tetra loads her twin pistols and dons her hood and mask. “Just remember: you have no Light.” “What?!” “Got some ‘splaining to do I see!”
