Is it though? It's still going strong. Bungie hasn't fallen. Many people are still excited for it. There are still well known streamers covering it. 3 MORE EXPANSIONS. So....is it dead or do you THINK it's dead?

  • I didn’t say it was dead. I said it was a failure. Proof of which is how many players it has lost since launch Further proof is how much of D1 they have brought back into D2

  •
Proof of which is how many players it has lost since launch
That is literally the nature of video games.

  • Players come and go. That's the nature of a live service game. It's not bleeding players atm...

  • Destiny 2 is hemorrhaging players at the moment. The count dropped from 8.4 million down to less than half that in 5months. This was deducted to previous seasons being a boring grindfest and Eververse holding the majority of the cosmetics and it put players off. Beyond Light is gradually bringing players back but how long until even more jump ship thanks to sunsetting deleting their progress? If I was a new player and you told me "your hard work gets deleted in a few months and oh you like that weapon? Yeah Bungie is going to make it useless soon" I'd drop this game like a bad habit. It's just not worth people investing their time into anymore, that's why it's loosing player fast.

  • Where on earth did you get 8.4 million from?

  • Peak play time on Day 1. It's recorded online.

  • Ok then. Compare that to player retention of literally any other triple A title.

  • IDK why people say it's hemorrhaging players. This happens literally at the end of every season. Reality is that there are a vast amount of people that either don't care about sunsetting or don't mind it. Reality is that it is the end of a LONG season and many people are playing other games. I myself am bouncing in between this, ffxiv, hollow knight, nioh 2, and minecraft dungeons. No, destiny is not dying. No, it's not hemorrhaging players. This mindset has existed for years. And destiny is still. Here.

  • yes it happens at the end of every season, but its losing way more than normal and not just losing players till the next expansion. D2 is losing players for good right now. so many people are leaving the game for good because bungie can't figure out their shit. It is definitely hemorrhaging players right now.

  • I'm pretty sure they did say what direction they were taking here fairly recently. And the people who are leaving are the type of people that do not like that direction. That said looking at the trends it really doesn't look like it's hemorrhaging as you guys say. And I'm honestly not surprised if this current season has less players Right now considering it's longer than most.

  • its not that bungie suddenly changed their direction. its that for forever destiny 2 has had problem after problem and bungie won't/can't do anything about it. People leaving isn't a spur of the moment thing, its because of years of bad experiences and bungie just overall being horrible devs.

  • Well, I'm not going to get into all the nitty gritty, but there was a lot there yeah. As far as hemorrhaging.... sorry man I just see stabilization happening. The death of the game was going to be in coo...but it did revive itself. Only time will tell.

  • Its more than that. There are car manufacturers that have loyal customers, and they buy cars from them they entire life. Same goes for smartphone brands. Bungie have a hard time keeping players, they come and go exactly and that is a problem. Destiny is a great concept and with the right design choices they could keep majority of players, but they cant because Destiny 2 is still going strong, as a disappointment.

  • Doesn't really seem like it based on the trends. Seems like they're retaining more and more players YoY.

  • Because it already bled them😂 D2 launch - around 6mil active players Just before forsaken - around 600K Just before shadowkeep - around 900K Currently - between 900K - 1.1mil If as a company you’ve lost around 5/6 of your player base even after making your game free to play, your product is failing

D2 had hype. It failed to deliver on it. And the game has just gotten consistently better. Roughly 1 mil players are still playing. That number, even with rise and fall, is a constant. It's not dipping to 200-300k now. Launches always have way more players. That goes for any game. For live service games, the initial sell AND the people who stay are the most important. The -blam!- players generally won't stick around much anyway. That means you have roughly 1 mil players that are very loyal to the game still. That's a lot of players. 1 mil, translate that the beyond light copies sold, and that's not including the store. ...I think it's pretty juvenile to call this a failing game. Anthem failed. Avengers is failing. Division died out. And destiny is still going.

  • You literally said in your opening line that it failed to deliver Bringing back content from D1 does not mean it’s getting better, it means that D2 is a failure

  • I wouldn't think so. More so nostalgia. If something is a failure, why would it not die out? Crucible by Amazon was a failure. Again, anthem was a failure. Maybe I should rephrase this: calling it a failure doesn't quite make it a failure. Year 1, totally. Year 2? 3? Nah, not really. Failure by definition - lack of success. Destiny is alive, retaining players, and kicking. So are you wishing for it to fail? Or are you looking at things that...I'm not sure if it's quite true.

Its maybe not a failure to pull the plug, but its definitely a failure based on investment and revenue by AAA standards, other wise Activision would milk that golden cow until its blue.

  • Activision is maybe not a quality gold standard, but they investment is not short. Based on reports they invested over 500m of $ in Destiny as a brand 1-3 and the revenue was very disappointing for them. They paid over 150m $ for MW2 (original game) just for the marketing. And based on insiders, its not Activision who was responsible for constant fails, but Bungies management.
