Today I became a Felon

This has been floating around Calguns. It's something a man from New York state said. At the very least give it a read.
Today I became a felon. It started out as a normal Tuesday for me. I woke up and Checked Facebook. Snuggled my 2 year old daughter and checked my email. I had an idea that today would be a bad one for me but I had no idea. The weather was a little overcast with sprinkles of rain but Taylor, my daughter, reminded me over and over I had promised to take her to the park. After lounging around the house snuggling and playing silly games that make her smile for the majority of the day I finally caved. So because of the weather my wife and I took our little girl to our local McDonald's so she could play in their indoor playplace. We got her chicken nuggets with the barbie toy. I even let her steal a few bites of my sundae in between trips up and down the slide. After some time we drove home and snuggled down on the couch together watching a Disney movie as we fell asleep. A full-on snoring nap. Her not me After a while we decided to put her down for the night early because she was still so tired. We changed her into her PJs and said goodnight to the stars. I left her room saying the same thing I've said since she was born. "Good night munchkin, Daddy loves you and I'll see you in the morning". As I sat down and opened up yahoo.com (I'm not a googler) on my iPad I saw an article that sparked my curiosity. "New York passes strictest gun laws in the nation in closed session" I read on to find out that after 30 years on this earth. Never arrested, never performing a hateful crime in my life. I haven't even been pulled over or ticketed in 12 years. I was being ordered to give up my inalienable rights. I was told the firearms and magazines that my father gave to me and his father to him had to be sold or destroyed. That I needed to register others so I could be put on a list like some registered sex offender or criminal. I was taken back. Surely this couldn't be, we have a 2nd amendment that's states very clearly "not to be infringed". I mean, I personally have sent over 15 letters to everyone that has a voice for me. My elected officials who speak for me would not desiccate our bill of rights, would they? So, after surfing the Internet for a while longer and checking what the fridge was holding out on me with. I too went to sleep. Now you ask, how did I become a criminal today? How did you become a felon? Seemed like a very uneventful day right? Well I'll tell you. I am a father, a husband, a law abiding citizen & a god fearing man and I like millions of my brethren will not register. We will not surrender. We will not conform to this unconstitutional law. We will not piss on the blood and ashes of our forefathers and those across the world who should have said enough and not silenced to satisfy tyrannical government.
• Where does it say anyone has the right to own an assault rifle? Did I miss that part of the Constitution? And if it's okay to own an AR-15 Bushmaster, why not just up the ante a little and make anything legal? Fully auto AK54? No problem. RPG? No problem. 155mm howitzer? No problem. The Second Amendment was written when the deadliest thing anyone could own was a Brown Bess musket. Let's get just a teeny bit real here, shall we?

    • That's the most bizarre and irrelevant story ever. First of all, you can keep your stupid gun for as long as you wish. You, just can't have rocket launchers and five miniguns. You, do not have rocket launchers, incendiary grenades, assault rifles with extended magazines or just weapons you would only hunt elephants with.

Gun control is less about restricting the types of weapons, and more about not giving weapons to idiots.

      • Hey look, paranoid raving. Hey buddy, I don't care about your damn kids and their sundaes, or that you're a husband, or whatever. Tell us exactly how, using the Constitution and the various court rulings that expand on it, your rights are being infringed by having to follow these laws. Enough of the emotional crap, and give us some facts.

Here's an honest question for you guys! I've seen people say things like "In other countries they don't have gun problems" but the problem in North America is that we have Mexico at our border which holds the various drug cartels. Each of these cartels would jump at the chance to begin making more profit by selling illegal guns in our country, what could we do if that began happening?

                • The argument that other objects can be used to kill people, so guns are okay is so flawed. Yes, it is possible to beat the shit out of someone with a baseball bat, but that doesn't mean guns are any better for it, so by removing an object ending 10,000+ innocent lives a year is in no way a bad thing. That's 10,000 or so fewer deaths a year, despite some crazy woman using a candle holder to kill her cheating husband or whatever.

not sure that a gunman could massacre a load of kids back in 1791 with a single shot, load-through-the-muzzle rifle.

                  • I don't agree with the last paragraph, as I feel it is a little extreme. I do not see what is wrong with a law abiding citizen owning a sidearm, shotgun, or rifle. I do not think that a government should exist to take away rights. However, are people like the man who wrote that letter aware of the law? From my understanding it is an assault weapon ban, but to me that means nothing as I do not know what "assault weapon" means. "Law limits ammunition magazines to seven bullets, down from 10." That seems the most drastic change I can see as many pistols can hold ~10-15. Ehh, I don't know. I'm not part of gun culture. My parents did not own guns. I do not own a gun although I intend to purchase one at some point provided it is still legal. I don't really know what I'm getting at, but I guess it is that I dislike both arguments from either side. Disarming law abiding citizens will not stop gun violence, and banning high-powered rifles with large capacity magazines is a good thing. There has to be some middle ground, why can't we find it? /thoughts

                          • Oh dear. I understand the sentimental value of the weapons passed down from one generation to the next, but in that case just get them so they no longer work and you can keep it only as a keepsake. The guy who wrote this will surrender, and so will pretty much everyone else.

                          • I'm all for lawful gun ownership but people need to stop waving the constitution around like its the god given excuse for them to own a weapon and start using actual reasons they deserve to own one in this present day and time.
