Anybody else understand that this is bad game design? Destiny asks you for one thing, a lot of your time. It should be very respectful of that time. Items you spend precious time earning should never be removed.
Saying that WoW has sunsetting is a copout excuse to try to cover mistakes of previously bad designs. Stop trying to be like WoW, try to be better. Whether you achieve it or not doesn’t matter. What matters is you constantly try to make a better product.
I left Destiny for awhile. What little time I had for entertainment meant I had to play as a casual player or else my livelihood would suffer. And it was okay to come back to the game. It was fun, there was a lot to do and all of my gear was useful. Fun experiences I had with my friends getting rare and unique weapons weren’t wasted.
With sunsetting this all changes. There’s no way I could spend the time investment I need to get the pinnacle weapons and try them out in time before they stop being useful.
So not only is Destiny asking for a huge sum of money for an expansion that I’d love to come back to and play, anytime I want to, but now it’s saying that if I don’t play as much as possible I’ll never experience the cool stuff I paid for.
Design should be fluid and it should be cohesive. Destiny is certainly fluid, feels like it’s constantly in a version 0.9 state, but this game has never had cohesive design principles across it as a whole product.
Forcing me to gather new gear because you want me to have a reason to keep playing new activities is terrible logic for a designer to have. It disrespects you’re player. The person you’re designing for. Once again, the ENTIRE reason you’re designing a game.
What has everybody been doing since this game came out? Playing only the pyramidion strike and nothing else? No! Because of course they aren’t. They want to play new stuff and get new stuff, because....it’s new! The experience of discovery and excitement at what your next weapon may be or what the armor piece might look like. That’s the fun of an RPG.
It’s completely ok if players still use weapons from early on the game. Be proud of that. You did a good job on that weapon. Make more things like that and people will stop using the old and start to vary they’re load-out and play style. They’ll find their own reason to explore the weapons available, and that’s the key point. It’ll be their choice. Since Destiny 1 launched its constantly felt like Destiny players have wanted to play their way, but Bungie doesn’t like that. They’re the strict father that is constantly trying to force them down a specific path that they want them to be on. And this sunsetting just feels like a punishment. It feels like you put your hearts and souls into this game and the dad is just angry that you didn’t follow in his footsteps. You end up just sitting there not understanding what’s happening. You don’t understand why you’re being punished. You feel like you’ve done nothing wrong yet there’s nothing you can do about it because the dad won’t listen to you. All he cares about is what he built. What he’s strived for.
TL;DR
This game has design problems, something about a strict dad. We’re just pissed that Destiny keeps wasting our time.
I’m probably going to be seen as a douche for writing something as passionate as this about a stupid video game during a time of such turmoil around the world, and especially in America.
