♤ Lightborne 18 - Savathuun's Song

The fireteam continues through the hallways of hell, fighting off hordes of Hive and crushing more crystals. Kairos begins to ponder, "Sloann, didn't you say there were only three other fireteams sent in here? I'm counting a lot of crystals right now... Sloann?" There's no response from the other end. "Uh, hey guys?" Icarus pulls his knife out of a Thralls back and turns to him, "I know. We're too far down. Communications are useless. Let's find the source of this and get top side. This way." He points with his bloody knife down another hall when suddenly from about five feet above their heads, a huge Hive Knight reaches around the corner and grabs the wall. Icarus grabs Kairos and ducks behind cover immediately. Indigo is already cloaked and hiding behind another pillar. Kairos whispers quieter than he's ever whispered before, "By the Light, I've never seen a Knight so huge before.." The towering beast leaves cracks in the ground where it steps, and its breathing sounds like two boulders being dragged across each other. It moves past there position very slowly. It's hide seems tougher than a regular Knight, with several more layers. Even the color seems gray and devoid of life. Icarus tries to get a better look at it as it slowly glances over its left shoulder. Icarus freezes in his tracks and the blood in his body runs cold. There, welded to Hive chains wrapped around the behemoths neck, sits a Ghost, struggling to break free. The shell is a classic from the earliest Guardians risen right after the first collapse, painted a matte black with a single metallic gold pinstripe down the center. The name slips his mouth without him thinking, "Davenport..." The Knight stops dead in its tracks. The head creaks as it turns to face the noise it just heard. Kairos makes a break for it and hides behind another wall. He looks back to where he believes Icarus to be, only to find that he didn't move at all. He wants to yell for him, but his the words don't come out. Indigo uncloaks beside Kairos. She whispers softly, "Come on, let's go. He'll catch up, I promise. Now let's move!" She slowly crouch walks away down the path it came from, with Kairos close behind. He looks back once more to see the Knight staring directly at Icarus, who still hasn't made a move. Kairos bites his tongue and clenches his eyes and he follows Indigo away. Icarus holds his knife in a position that reflects light toward Indigo. She catches the glimpse and watches as he signals her with the flashes. Indigo nods and relays the message to Kairos. "We need to distract that Knightmare. Got any ideas?" Kairos stands up and tells her, "I need to get someone's attention? Of course I know how to do that!" He steps into direct line of sight with the beast and shouts, "Hey! Has anyone ever told you how damn ugly you are!?" He cups his hands over his mouth and laughs hysterically. The Knightmare roars ungodly loud, shaking the entire room. Icarus immediately makes a break for its leg, placing a trip mine behind its right leg, and stabbing the top of its left foot with a proximity knife. He dodges toward the group as the knife explodes, throwing the creature off balance, causing it to step right on top of the trip mine, blasting its right foot to pieces. It screams in agony, as it teeters forward. Icarus' eyes flash with hate as he materializes a gold plated Quickfang from his back. He spins it three times before executing a single upper cut as the Knightmare falls directly toward him. The slice leaves a gash in the Hives neck, and shatters the chain. Icarus sheaths the blade, grabs the chain with the Ghost, and shouts, "RUN!!" as they all take off running away from the colossal Knight. Right before they get through the doorway out of the chamber, the Knightmare pushes itself up off the ground and lets out a deafening cry of rage. They continue running for a ways until they are sure they aren't being followed. Kairos throws up in a corner before exclaiming, "Whyyy!?? What's wrong with you, you psychopath! That thing could have just swallowed us if it wanted to! You thought you could fight it!? What was so important that you thought-" Icarus raises the chain with the Ghost still on it. He pants as he continues to catch his breath. Indigo immediately rushes over to him. "Is that...?" She grabs the Ghost with the chains dangling off both ends. The Ghost speaks in a low tone, "Indie? Is that you?" He blinks twice. Indigo lets out a single tear. "Yes! It's me!" She looks up at Icarus, who is staring intently at the Ghost. Indigo sets the Ghost down. "Don't move, okay?" She pulls out her fusion rifle and places the barrel directly on one side of the chain and fires. The chain shatters, leaving just two small chain links hanging off one side now. She places the rifle on the other side, just a little bit closer, and fires again, this time only leaving a single chain link remaining. The Ghost flies up on his own now that the extra weight is gone. "You can't believe the things I've seen! Do you know where Davenport is?" He looks around confused. Icarus walks past him and frowns. "If these cursed halls tell me anything... it's that he was killed and placed in one of those crystals the Hive was using." He tilts his head down. "I'm.. sorry." The Ghost floats lower. "Oh.." Kairos butts in, "Not to kill the moment, but we've got trouble." He points towards the path leading down, where several Cursed Thrall begin their march up towards the party. Icarus looks up from his plight and readies his sub machinegun. Indigo notches an arrow and draws her bow. Kairos flings out the duo and takes three shots, causing a massive chain reaction that shakes the entire chasm. Indigo lets an arrow fly down the hall, causing another line of explosions, shaking the walls even more. The ceiling begins to crumble above them. "Move!" She yells, dodging a falling rock and making a break for the pit. The rest follow closely behind, with Icarus taking point, clearing out several more groups of the Cursed Thrall that seem to be crawling out of every hole. Rocks begin falling quicker and in larger chunks. Some even crush some of the Thrall on the way. Indigo looks behind them as a massive boulder falls, blocking their exit. Kairos exclaims, "Well, I guess we're stuck in here now.." He sends one more round into the last group of Cursed Thrall before the chasm goes nearly silent. They all catch their breaths before Kairos stands up straight and squints slightly. "Do you guys hear that?" He begins walking towards a hole in the wall with a slight purple glow. "It sounds like... really bad singing." He begins picking away at the wall until he can peek through. "Uhh... guys?" He steps away horrified, pointing at the hole. Indigo readies her fusion rifle, "Watch out." She rolls her eyes as it charges. The blast blows out a huge portion of the wall, and as the dust settles, the room lights up. A massive Shrieker sits in wait above a single crystal shard. The singing grows stronger and beckons them to come closer.

Just now had the chance to finish reading this. Kairos never ceases to amuse. lol. Icarus is definitely my favourite, though. I like his calm. I can't wait to start writing in D2 for all the potential Titan has, but I'm only just barely more than halfway done with the first arc and I still have two more before I can touch the Red War.
