Why Bloom (When ADS) needs to go this season.

Bloom has always been a dividing topic in the Destiny community. Some of us defend it as if it's the only thing keeping PvP balanced, others condemn it for adding RNG to accuracy on weapons where it isn't welcome. I'm going to try to remain as objective as possible and bring up some of the most common arguments in favor of Bloom while avoiding any that I see as weak so I don't end up straw-manning. One of the most common reasons I see to keep ADS Bloom around is aim-assistance. Destiny's aim-assist is noticeably stronger when compared to other shooter games, to the point where weapons such as Fusion Rifles can shoot through walls and objects if the target is close enough to the corner. When trying other games such as Borderlands, Fallout 76, and even Call of Duty, I can tell that the weapons in these games aren't as sticky as Destiny. I believe that this isn't a reason to keep ADS Bloom around. In the Rise of Iron DLC, Hand Cannons received something called aim-assist drop off as well as receiving some hefty damage drop off. This makes it so that the further you are from your target, the less sticky your gun becomes and the more likely you are to miss. Even if you do hit the target though, your damage will be so low that you're better off with a Scout Rifle, a Pulse Rifle, or even an Auto-Rifle. In the Shadowkeep DLC, Hand Cannons were further tuned with a damage cut off point. That means there is a point where a Hand Cannon will not register a hit if the target is beyond a certain range, more specifically 40 meters. Considering all this aim-assist isn't a reason to keep ADS bloom around because, outside of close to mid range, Hand Cannons don't really hit that hard and aren't that sticky. Another reason I've heard to keep ADS Bloom around is the effectiveness of Luna's/Not Forgotten on Console. Lunas/Not Forgotten have been part of the Console meta ever since the day they came out. They were the Console equivalent to Ace of Spades on PC, so strong that no other weapons were used. According to ADS Bloom supporters, if ADS Bloom were removed from Destiny, then Hand Cannons would dominate the Crucible and would be the only weapons used. I have to say that this isn't a reason to keep ADS Bloom around either because it is false. In a world where Hand Cannons kick harder than a mule and shoot to the side of where you are aiming, it's no wonder Luna's/Not Forgotten are still meta. These two Hand Cannons have everything a player needs in a competitive setting. Great burst damage, great peripheral vision when ADS, the ability the peak-shot, and a TTK of around 0.8 with the lack of Bloom being icing on the cake. After Season of the Worthy launched, many new weapons became part of the meta. Suros Regime, Hard Light, Monte Carlo, Uriel's Gift, and many other Auto-Rifles now compete with Hand Cannons for TTK. Pulse rifles are also seeing more use. I ran into more than five when playing for the past few days. Because of this, Luna's/Not Forgotten aren't really cause for keeping ADS Bloom around and are more likely a cause to remove ADS Bloom so that other weapons can shine. Another reason I've seen for keeping ADS Bloom around is it's an equalizer. Before 2010, the year where ADS Bloom was first introduced, the only time you missed a shot was if your aim was off, you were failing to control the recoil, or you were being flinched. So highly accurate players were very dominant in PvP games. Since many first person shooters were relatively fast paced at the time, and still are, newer players could easily get lost in all the action. So Bloom is added to encourage players to slow down and pace their shots, that way newer players have a chance I'd have to say this isn't a very good reason either. Equality and Fairness are two different things in PvP games. Take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ24eDTg_s4 That is the price of this equalizer. This, for obvious reasons, isn't fair. Accuracy on a precision style weapon, which is what Hand Cannons, Scouts, Sidearms, and Snipers are, should never be based on RNG. These weapons are balanced around the ability to hit head-shots. So if your sights are on target shouldn't your shot be on target, regardless of how fast you're firing? And if your shot misses even though you were on target, is that user error or the gun failing to do its end of the job? On top of that, players new and old need something to use something visual as a basis in order to find mistakes they are making and improve. ADS Bloom has no noticeable indication that you're firing too fast, so players have to go by the feeling of the gun. The problem with this is, the feeling of the gun can contradict the reality of the game. That means you can look and feel like you're pacing your shots, but still miss because you shot 0.04 seconds too soon. With all that said ADS Bloom should be removed because, in the context of a first person shooter, it adds RNG to a fundamental part of the game where RNG is not welcome. It also does not encourage players to pace their shots as other weapons that remain accurate, even if you spam-fire, have become part of the meta. The final reason, I'm willing to go over, for keeping Bloom around is how long it has been in the game. For those of you who don't know, bloom wasn't originally part of Destiny. It was Bungie's first attempt to prevent Hand Cannons from working outside their intended ranges. Those who think Bloom should stay in the game argue that because Bloom has been in the game for so many years it should stay because many players have taken the time to learn how to aim with bloom and to remove it would invalidate their time spent. I have to say this reason to keep bloom around contradicts itself. Bloom was added to the Destiny franchise a year after it came out, when it was arguably too late to add it. All Bungie had to do at this time was do what they did in Shadowkeep and Rise of Iron and Hand Cannons would have been just fine. With all this said Bloom when ADS is a band-aid fix to a balance problem that no longer exists. The wound is healed, it's time to remove the bandages.
