Hey there!
Please make sure that you are in the right location. The Magician invitation requires Cabal kills on Io, so your best way to get the kills will be one of the Public Events with the Cabal Drill.

Thats what ive been doing. Its getting annoying.

As Xûr is still here, you could try deleting your invitation and picking it up again. Any progress will be lost though. You can also try to restart the game. This might help as well.
