Dear Cozmo, Bungie, & The Community, I feel that the community is split into three groups right now: Those that understand the need for a grind and like the bounties. Those that don't want to have to go out of their way for the enhancement cores. Those that don't like enhancement cores. I think it's also an important distinction that the main problem is using enhancement cores for infusion, not the masterworking part. This solution only appeases one of these groups. Personally I am somewhere between the first two, but I have two possible solutions that would function similarly to these two. ( I will cry if solution B isn't implemented. Please God/Bungie, make this a reality!) Solution A: Seasonal Gunsmith Quest & Buff (Passive Core Earning!)
Every season, have a gunsmith-centric quest line that has to do with the story. Maybe make it into something with some lore, like if he was investigating the weapons of sorrow. The quest line would commence a week before each season starts, and have a series of requirements relating to your player level and your power level. The main (or only) part to complete the quest requires you to collect points that are given by leveling up and getting powerful/exotic drops. Once you complete this (which wouldn't require playtime of a specific activity but would require a medium-size commitment,) you will be rewarded with a lump sum of 10ish enhancement cores and will give you a season-long buff providing you with one enhancement core per level-up and powerful/exotic drop. This would reward players for playing while also putting a soft cap on how much can be earned each week. It also gives people a relatively large amount of cores at the beginning of the season when infusion is a priority, and then pays out slower later when masterworking is more important.
Pros and Cons:
Pros: -No need to do specific tasks -Doesn't just give out free enhancement cores -Soft cap on cores -Rewards players for playing -YAY LORE! (Lore is great and I need more!) -Room for attached triumphs! (No realistic title though) Cons: -Requires an effort on the part of Bungie to make the quest -Gives A LOT of enhancement cores away -Doesn't actually require any additional grinding (I think this was the problem with enhancement cores in the first place though, so maybe it's a pro?) -More stuff I can't think of
Solution B: Bi-Weekly Gunsmith Event (Auto Infusion!)
The idea behind this is building off of the weapon data collection system by rewarding players for using certain weapons. The gunsmith will track your kills with each archetype of weapon and tally it up, resetting every two weeks. Then, as the second of the two weeks starts the gunsmith will determine what weapon archetype you got the most kills with for each weapon slot you used the most. He then gives you a weeklong quest (NOT BOUNTY) in which you must get a certain number of multikills (kinetic), shield-matching kills (elemental), and major kills (power), and at the end of the week it upgrades all of the weapons matching what the quest was (ie. you used a power machine gun for the quest, so all your power slot machine guns get upgraded to the power level of your highest power level power weapon, making you not have to infuse your most-used weapons!) This resets every two weeks, making a cycle of auto-infusion without the use of enhancement cores or random tasks.
Pros & Cons:
Pros: -I like it better! -Doesn't add more cores to a player's inventory -Encourages experimentation with loadouts -No need to do specific tasks -Makes it more feasible to use old weapons that aren't as powerful by auto-infusing them without wasting cores on a weapon that isn't powerful but is still fun to play -Rewards players for playing with the weapons they prefer -Can very easily attached to triumphs for completing the quest with a certain weapon archetype, emblems can be a part of it, maybe triumph-locked shaders that can only be applied to the weapon archetype? (OMG NOW THAT I'M WRITING THIS DOWN I LOVE MY IDEA EVEN MORE! #NoBias) -Maybe also a Title called Jack of All Trades (or something) that is unlocked once you do this multiple times with every weapon archetype? Please god do this! Cons: -Requires an effort on the part of Bungie to make the event -Sort of restricts loadouts every two weeks, which isn't ideal (As an afterthought you could just reward them based on whatever got the most kills in the two weeks and have a pre-quest to get a certain number of kills every two weeks) -Doesn't actually require any additional grinding (I think this was the problem with enhancement cores in the first place though, so maybe it's a pro?) -More stuff I can't think of
Alt Solution: Slightly Change Infusion
Just make it so that weapons of the same archetype can be infused together similarly to how weapons of the same name can be: without the use of infusion cores.
