Make swords secondary weapons

Since swords are currently one of the worst weapons in the game, why not make them secondary weapons (except black talon). I think this could actually make them useful and viable in pvp as well as pve. In pvp I think they should have a damage nerf, if they ever become secondary, and a slower heavy attack. This should mean that landing multiple light attacks consistently will reward the user, or they use a slow heavy attack to get a ohko, like it currently is. Just an idea but I think it could work

  • Sword should not be a secondary.The big problem with swords is the stupid nerf to there ammo and insanely reduce efficiency and dmg reduction.In D1 you had 30 ammo for legendaries and 45-50 for exotics now its 7-10 across the board.Another thing that hurt sword was the removal of the iron lord seal that lets you reflect.I love swords but the community don't use them enough for them to warrant a buff.Hopefully they buff the ammo and stats back to D1 and introduce a classwide exotic that allows reflection to avoid exotics like oathkeeper that benefits one class.

  • NO. Look what happened last time when they decided to mess around with the weapon setup. I think that swords should stay exactly where they are

        That or buff the damage they do and amount of ammo in pve, and add some sort of damage resistance in pvp to make them actual viable weapons to use in both modes. Because right now they feel like secondaries already, except they are in the heavy slot.

      • In D1 I ran with the Young Wolfs Howl all the time, even over Gally, because it was beast. Granted my D1 Titan has Dunemarchers, high agility and solar speed buffs. So I had [i]speed[/i] when using it to help avoid damage. Haven’t used them much in 2. Even with good mobility there isn’t enough speed to let you use them very well. Unless your just goofing in a patrol zone or strike. Heck I haven’t chased the exotic swords yet either. No point really.

      • Perhaps a PvE damage nerf to bring them in line with other special weapons. In PvP, just an ammo restriction is needed or you may as well melee your enemy without a sword. Instakilling at point blank range isn’t overpowered; you gotta get in their faces to pull it off.

      • If guarding was more ammo efficient and better at reducing damage taken, then it'd probably be worth the power weapon slot. Even infinite guard swords feel pointless to guard with. Sword gameplay is already high risk as-is, at least in PvE(I don't play PvP in hero shooters like Destiny, so no opinion there.) Often times, there are even targets you simply cannot hit with a sword, which is already a disadvantage. They aren't like energy swords in halo with a super accurate, high speed, long distance lunge. The one supposed advantage of swords is they offer defensive value instead of just sheer offense, but it eats so much ammo to guard a boss's AoE stomp or anything similar to make it worth it. Better off just swinging wildly to do as much damage as possible and let your teammates pick you up. In addition to ammo consumption, guarding also takes too long to activate following attack animations, while having its own animation delay before taking effect. In the amount of time you swing->guard an attack effectively->swing again, a regular kinetic or energy weapon will have done the same damage by virtue of the pauses you have to take if you don't want to get thrown across the map. Sword targeting is also kind of odd. It's really easy to feel on weapons such as worldline's AoE, or Crown Splitter in general. Often times you will be facing forward, but when you attack, you will snap 90 degrees to hit the target to your right. For AoE/cleave attacks, there is no need for a sword to have such annoying snap targeting. Say I want to blitz through a bunch of enemies with worldline's AoE, but what often happens instead is that it just snaps to the target nearest me, ruining its potential and wasting ammo. Say I want to use Crown-Splitter's cleaving light swings effectively for clearing smaller enemies, but I can't always do that because it locks to one target. I still love swords more than any gun in the game for their more thrilling, high-risk gameplay they offer(sitting at a safe distance and clicking on heads bores me), but often times I find myself with my character's face in the dirt thinking "Well golly gee, if I were to use any other weapon right now, I'd probably still be alive."

        • At first I agreed with this. I kinda feel like they just need a small buff though. They should be able to block more without wasting as much amo in crucible. A small amo buff would be nice as well. Swords are a heavy competing against rockets, grenade launchers and linear fusion rifles. In crucible they don’t feel as strong as thy should be aside from the two exotics. As for pve people are sleeping on swords they’re not bad.

            • Like what other people are saying guard should be more efficient maybe make it so it doesn't use ammo unless someone shoots you. Exotic swords need a huge bump in ammo around 80 to 100 and the secondary attacks for exotics should do more damage. I want a hard choice over using a exotic sword over thunder lord or whisper

            • Instead of reinventing the whole weapon class how about we just fix what's wrong with them? That seems like a much more time and cost effective suggestion and also the more intelligent one.

                Swords haven't been the same since they left the 3 exotics behind in D1. Those swords were badass each in their own way.

                    I agree, so long as they are power ammo. Hell even make them in the kinetic slot. Just so long as its power ammo and only gets 2 charges in pvp. Edit- also make them guaranteed 1hkos in pvp, since the range is like 0
