My guess is that there's actually a difference between earth-born and reef-born awoken. Reef-born awoken were transported to the Distributarey (i think that's what it's called) and gained special powers while the earth-born awoken did not. I think when the Darkness and the Light clashed during the Collapse, it sent out waves of paracausal power that transformed some people. The closer people were to the source of the wave the deeper they were effected.
of course this is just a wild guess. I don't really have any evidence supporting or denying my theory
• You mean the darkness and the light specifically ignored other corpses and agreed on entering the ones who would become guardians? Or the darkness sought to kill everything and the light tried to stop it by entering some of those afflicted?

  • There is very solid new lore that states that all awoken came from the distributary and remained hidden in the reef for some time. Eventually some left the reef to help on Earth, and then became estranged from the reef awoken.

  •
Eventually some left the reef to help on Earth, and then became estranged from the reef awoken.
Is this part absolutely confirmed? Because i remember our ghost saying in a mission in D1 that our character was part of the exodus program program during the Collapse.

Here’s the main quote:
”Broadcast to everyone. I’m going to allow anyone who wants to leave the Reef to go. This is their one and only chance.”
• Yes. It’s in the lore book “awoken of the reef”, which you can read on the Ishtar Collective website. The book is directly preceded by the book “marasenna” which ends with mara leading some of the awoken out of the distributary. This is probably inconsistent with previous lore but it’s more concrete and recent and so is probably the “correct” version, for now at least.

  • Hmmm. Well the Awoken were technically part of the exodus program. Still makes sense to me.

  • Sorry to disappoint, but it all comes down to the game being nerfed and recut before launch. Originally each race had a different origin scene with the Ghost finding and resurrecting your character in a different location before finding your ship and reaching the Tower. Eventually all the cut scenes were reduced to the Exo version, which explains why you were able to be resurrected among hundreds of skeletons. I read an interview somewhere in which Peter Dinklage (the original Ghost) recorded 3 different versions of the first Reef encounter with the actress who played Mara Sov, one for each character race. The Queen's reaction to the Awoken Guardian was completely different, as you would expect.

  • It would’ve been way cooler if they didn’t cut it

Just because bungie nerfed the story doesn't mean my theory isn't true. I'm talking strictly in-universe, not bungie being stupid. Bungie may have rewrote the story, but my theory is still entirely plausible lore-wise.

  • No that sounds pretty accurate. Multiple times throughout lore you'll see Awoken referred to as either Reef-born Awoken or just Awoken.
