On the death of Xol

Oh boy. Another post about Xol? Before you tap/click the back button hear me out... I, like many, was initially upset at how easy it was to kill Xol. He is a god after all. Right? Well the more I think about it (and grind strikes for level 50) and listen closely to the audio the more I am okay with how Bungie did this. Yes obviously there was a lack of buildup and this led many to not care about the character BUT...regarding the pure notion of killing a worm god and being able to wrap my head around it, I think I can finally do it. Oryx killed a Worm God with ease, and we killed Oryx one on one. That's the first bullet point. But it goes deeper than that. Rasputin is the OG warmind, which have the most powerful arsenals in the solar system by default. Insert our guardian and Anna Bae. With her help, we take The Valkyrie, already a super powerful weapon that helped Rasputin trap Xol the first time, and super charge it by overloading the Neural Net and Rapsutins core. With our new super weapon forged, we take out hordes of thrall, acolytes, wizards, ogres, and super knights. Xol was summoning these actively during our battle, on top of spitting molten acid and turning the ground to roiling void energy. With our mini nukes we crack through the tough exo of Xol and destroy him with the fury of a thousand suns. But wait, he's a god and gods don't die, right? Well not exactly. The Worm "Gods" aren't actual gods. They're very powerful beings that are worshiped AS gods by the hive. So we really just killed a giant worm mage with armor class 100 by hurling dozens of mini nukes at it. I don't know about you but that seems plausible to me

      • We didn't kill Oryx one on one, it was six on one. And we did so not with our might but with our cunning. Nothing about that fight indicates that we were stronger than Oryx (and by proxy Xol), only smarter and more resilient, and nothing in the Books of Sorrow indicate that Oryx overcame Akka in a fight. Only that he killed him. The Strike did a poor job of depicting both Xol's and the Valkyrie's strength and acted more as a Bray Family Ego Stroke. I don't mean to be a downer, but the fact of the matter is that the Warmind expansion took over a year to write and script, only had three story missions and two strikes, and practically laughed in the face of Destiny's continuity. There's no sense in defending it, we're all comfortable with the disappointment at this point.

        • You got it. Plus: 1. given his association with The Darkness it’s not guaranteed that he’s permanently dead. 2. He was the weakest, physically, of the Worm Gods and had been trapped in the Martian ice for centuries without an energy source. 3. Oryx was initially defeated as a story missions boss. He didn’t become 100 ft tall menace of a raid boss until we chased him back to his throne world.

The reason why I'm fine with how Xol died is because they continually tell us throughout the DLC that he's not only the weakest of the original worm gods, but that he's been furthered weakened by being denied of his tithe feed and soulfire offerings ever since Rasputin initially froze him. Now granted, they could've made his death much better, but being reduced to a strike enemy makes sense even if we don't like the outcome. Same idea goes for Nokris (who had literally no lore prior, aside from being Oryx's other son, so every idea of him before Warmind was just hype).

            • That. And the fact that Nokris not only is a necromancer, but he has a Throne World, so I’m assuming Xol has one as well. Which means we will see them in the future. Either Nokris resurrects himself and Xol or we fight and kill them both in their Throne Worlds

              • Blah blah blah, all i hear is folklore, nothing bungie does or says in game or out is worth anything, it can all be changed as and when they please. To be honest it kind of undermines the whole lore community, and should make anyone who took any interest in it feel a little annoyed, and a bit silly. Myself included. Good day gentlemen.

              • Xol and Nokris was lock in ice by Rasputin. The genkidama of the traveller wake up them so it's normal if they are weak it was over a thousand years that he had not fought.

I solo’d xol in one shot yet needed five players and around 100 lives to beat oryx who was at the mercy of his worm god. I killed Nokris by myself. But his brother Crota took around the same tries as their daddy. It should have been a raid. Or a series of strikes. RIP creativity.

              • Sorry, man. But there aren’t enough words in the world that’ll change my mind about how shitty of a job they did with Nokris and Xol. They could’ve held up a Taken King-esque expansion on their own, with no ties to Rasputin whatsoever (hell, Rasputin and Osiris could carry full $60 titles, but I digress). They’ve could’ve had their own Raid, and IMO, that’s where they should’ve belong.

                  • With Oryx, we technically didn’t kill him. We killed his tithe system, his court, and pretty much all sources of tribute to keep his work fed. It stands to reason that in the raid when we denied him the light which the Light Eaters dropped, his worm began consuming him. And that’s what chopped his health bar. So while they’re of a similar sect of enemies I wouldn’t say the two are comparable. That said, I do agree with your points. We had some serious help, and we’re badass as it is. PLUS he is the weakest of the 5 Worm Gods. So I can accept that we killed him in a strike/story mission. My only issue is that from a writing point of view it felt rushed and underwhelming. Weakest or not, he’s still a worm god. That and I feel more complicated mechanics would have made it a little more enjoyable

                    • An event like this (Killing a Hive God) is what I expected on getting a new Class ability. Killed a Hive God and received thier power (Like Oryx did) Could have got a Hive themed Ability tree.

                    • Technically we killed Oryx 6 on 1. Unless you consider the crutch of self-res that could be used to solo. Yeah, that's right, I went there. Fight me #Leavewormhuskalone

                      • I would have liked it more if xol was immune, but hitting him with the Valkyrie removed his immunity. I mean, the build up was all just charging the Valkyrie anyway.

Agreed. Besides that, one could argue that maybe the Worm”gods” themselves arent that strong anyways. The fact they get ‘eaten’ (how the f*ck do you eat a wormgod?) makes the eater all powerful because of the symbiosis thing. Nokris, well.. didn’t we kill an Archon (house devils?) after we just got rezzed by the Ghost in D1 with white armor/weapons?..
