Why Enemy Levels Matter (Part of Why Destiny 2 Feels Bland)

TL;DR: With no enemy levels in Destiny 2 our guardians have not progressed. We are not powerful. We are not interesting. Nothing feels worth it. So I start up the game for the first time and I'm playing through the campaign. I'm gradually learning the difference between certain enemies and what their time-to-kill is. There are some tanky enemies who are pretty annoying to fight... I have to put a good amount of bullets into them to finish them off, and occasionally these guys spawn in twos. So I've reached max level, I've acquired the most powerful weapons and items in the game. I go down to a planet to do some patrols etc, you know any random mission that I could have done when I was level 3. Those tanky enemies... And in fact, every enemy... Still feels the same to fight. They still take the same amount of time to kill. My guardian hasn't changed at all. These so-called powerful weapons are not powerful. I go into a Nightfall strike where the difficulty supposedly matches my power level... And these same enemies are even harder to kill. And you know what? In Destiny 1 that was a good thing! I really felt like this activity was meant to challenge me so it was okay that these enemies took longer to kill and were more of a threat... But in the back of my mind I felt comfort knowing that completing activities like that was possible because my guardian had grown to the point where doing patrols was a cakewalk because of how strong I had become. Enemies would die to one shot all the time. Tanky enemies were now as strong as the weaker enemies when I first started the game..... It all made sense and it felt good to progress. • If enemies are just going to scale with the player, what's the point in even having a level system? What's the point in gathering more "powerful" gear? I could understand slightly if higher level equipment had additional perks but all the weapons and armour are just higher level versions of what you had before and the enemies you face with them are scaled to those levels so the whole thing is just pointless. The whole point of leveling in a game is to feel more powerful, you get a new piece of equipment and start mowing through low level enemies until you reach an area with more powerful enimies, collect even better equipment and start the process again. The way this works, if all of the story missions are unlocked from the start you could go straight to the final boss and murder him at level 1 and it would be just as hard as going there at level 30 which takes a far higher amount of time and effort to reach for literally no gain.
