So, by the explanation in "edit2", your problem is not "diversity" it's a problem with storytelling.
If that is truly the case, why comment about orientation at all? Just say the Destiny storytelling is sub-par. No one would have disagreed, no hubub.
Methinks the answer to that queston is that you are deliberately stir the pot.

Basically the fact that a character is gay in this comic resonates with OP in some way or another. If the ‘forced diversity’ was truly a big issue, then OP would have simply turned a blind eye. If writing is the issue, don’t bring politics into it

Because when they focus so hard on these political talking points, they ignore the actual plot of the game in favor of a romance about gay lovers just for the sake of saying, "Look see! Look see! See how diverse!"
