Another reason why D2 is so simplified. Don’t get me wrong D1 wasn’t a complete bundle of choices, but atleast sub classes could be optimised how you wanted to play. D2 should have really expanded on this, and we could see some awesome variety of firepower and unique contributions from guardians in different pve situations. Would probably negatively impact pvp, but just keep the current subclass builds for pvp.

 •
Don’t get me wrong D1 wasn’t a complete bundle of choices, but atleast sub classes could be optimised how you wanted to play.
this constantly grinds me when people start grumbling about this. honestly, there's effectively no difference. In D1, you're class setup allowed you to change you grenade type, your jump type, your agility/armour/recovery balance and then gave a small selection of additional perks that could be used to create a few different ways to play that class in terms of maxing DPS output or a stealth build etc. In D2, you're class setup allows you to change you grenade type, your jump type and then gives two options for additional perk clusters that are used to create a few different ways to play that class in terms of maxing DPS output or a stealth build etc. meanwhile, your mobility/resilience/recovery balance is now decided by your armour. basically, the only difference is that D2 took away the requirement to faff with your skill tree to find the perk synergies. call it "dumbing down" all you like but the end result is the same and let's be honest here, if spending hours on end tweaking your build to perfection is your thing then you'd be playing Path of Exile anyway, not Destiny...

 • Very good point. Maybe as it gave the appearance of having more customisation made it better? I don’t know. But I absolutely hate the current set up. They had a real opportunity to make a fully customisable sub class, but they restricted us even further.

 • It’s undeniable that less variety is never good and is arguably the main over riding problem with D2 in general... 😞

 • Um, what you’re saying makes sense, but I have to disagree. The proof is in the pudding. In D1 if you went into a raid with the wrong setup, you were going to have a bad time. Go into crucible with your raid setup, you were going to have a bad time. In D2 you can do the hardest “end game” activities without giving your setup much thought. You can raid with blue weapons and armor without paying attention to your skill tree (errr... bush?). There’s zero reason to min-max stats, and even if you want to there aren’t as many options to do it. This was by design. Bungie was tired of trying to balance unique skills and unique perks and the multiple combinations that players could use to be powerful. So, they’ve completely neutered the way we used to customize builds. Maybe the “go faster” patch will help, but it seems unlikely.
