https://www.pcgamer.com/cd-projekt-red-responds-to-loot-box-controversy/ CD Projekt Red responds to loot box controversy By Joe Donnelly 2 days ago "If you buy a full priced game, you should get a big, polished piece of content." Loot boxes remain a contentious issue in videogames. Having impacted the industry significantly in 2017, politicians have called for tighter regulation, while some analysts have questioned the profitability of single-player games going forward. The enduring success of The Witcher 3 against last year's highest-selling games, however, suggests players remain invested in solo adventures. In November, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński proposed its long-awaited Cyberpunk 2077 will include online elements to ensure its long-term success. With this in mind, I ask the developer's co-founder Marcin Iwiński where he and his team stand with loot boxes—suggesting the controversial mechanic has dominated the conversation around single-versus-multiplayer games in the last 12 months. "'Conversation' sounds way too nice to describe what was happening last year. I would rather call it community backlash," says Iwiński . "And this time around, it wasn’t just the hardcore community, there were a lot of really pissed off gamers out there and they decided to speak up. Where we stand is quite simple and you could see it with all of our past releases—most recently The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and GWENT. If you buy a full priced game, you should get a big, polished piece of content, which gives you many, many hours of fun gameplay. "The definition of ‘many’ may vary on a title-by-title basis, but in our case it was always 50-60+ hours of the main story-line, with up to a couple of hundred of hours of side activities—if you really wanted to max out the title. To me, this is a fair deal. You get what you paid for, plus we are always trying our best to overdeliver. There is no better PR than a happy gamer recommending your title to their friends." Iwiński continues: "Then there’s additional paid content. What we call Expansions (not DLC, mind you). Things like add-ons way back in the Baldur’s Gate era. We released two Expansions like that, and each of them was a meaningful piece of content delivering many hours of new story and gameplay. Finally, there are the DLCs. For us, they’re small pieces of content which should be available for free (and that was the case with TW3). "The above covers full-price titles, but there’s also free-to-play territory. Here we have GWENT, where you can buy card kegs and some vanity items. Again, the deal is simple—you can play the game for free and craft your desired card collection this way, or decide to spend money and get card kegs. The choice is yours, and the only thing you pay for is time and convenience." Iwiński emphasises the need for transparency from developers, and that information about their games should be readily available to players. Players can then make well-informed decisions with their money, and if they buy a full-priced game, says Iwiński, they should get "numerous hours of gameplay and a significant amount of content" for their cash. "The moment they feel you are reaching out for their wallet in any unfair way, they will be vocal about it. And—frankly speaking—I think it's good for the industry," Iwiński adds. "Things often look great from a spreadsheet perspective, but decision makers often aren’t asking themselves the question of 'How would gamers feel, or is this offer a fair one?'. Gamers are striking back, and I really hope this will change our industry for the better." Referring again to The Witcher 3's long-term success, I ask Iwiński if CD Projekt Red will or at least would be willing to return to The Witcher world, even if there are no plans for The Witcher 4 as yet. "We’ve devoted a big part of our lives to The Witcher and it means a lot to us, so we’re definitely not abandoning this universe," Iwiński says. "If you miss your favourite characters—give GWENT a go. If you’re a fan of storytelling, there’s Thronebreaker coming out in the near future. However, in terms of big RPGs, it’s time for Cyberpunk 2077." On that point, I ask how CD Projekt Red deals with the hype and excitement brough by a single-word, six character-long tweet. "It’s a huge responsibility and a lot of pressure," says Iwiński. "We know we need to deliver. And we will." TAKEAWAYS dlc are small bits of content that should be free. COO I'M LOOKING AT YOU... NO BS'ING ASIDE DESTINY (2) was modified to sell LOOT BOXES we all know it. if bungie would've just made a great game without the damn GREED they would be swimming in money and us in content. bungie disrespected their players and are now seeing the consequences of their ACTIONS! • Of course Bungie loses lol, they are at a situational disadvantage. CD Projekt Red self publishes being the major difference. They also have GoG. Bungie has what? Their storefront, which donates does it not? They also have Activision up their butt, as you can imagine that's a problem on many levels. Not excusing Bungie, just saying no crap lol. Also PSA buy games from GoG whenever you can, rather than steam. Support these peeps, nice to see they are catching on more and more.

      • Nah this is wrong . Cdpr and bungie are both very passionate about the products they make. It's just that bungie is very passionate about being punched in the balls. They put tons of time money and effort into making a machine that's great for punching you in the balls. Unfortunately, that's not something most people enjoy

          • I can't remember his name, but he was the lead creator of Final Fantasy XV. He said something in an interview more than a year ago. I don't have the exact quote on me, but it went something like this: When a game is in development, it is ours. We put our time into making it into whatever we want it to be. But once release day comes, the game stops being ours. It becomes the players' game. And from that point on, we strive to make the game not what we want it to be, but what they want it to be. This, in my opinion, is the attitude that developers should have. When you make a game, you need to put your players first, otherwise you have the situation Destiny is in, with player counts dropping day by day in a game that's supposed to entice people to play longer than the length of the campaign.

            • Look we all know its a problem, we all know it has a negative effect on the gaming industry, but we also all know capitalism wins. We can shout at devs all we like its their paymasters who force these things into games, the real problem is the people who buy them, they generally have more money than sense. How do we stop them? I dont know the answer to that, we should probably just call them dicks whenever we see them spend money, and pay no attention to their new shiny thing.

            •
"If you buy a full priced game, you should get a big, polished piece of content."
And it is not even up for debate that you received this with the launch of D2. What D2 delivers on its "first" playthrough is more than enough to justify its $60 and leaves little room for complaint. Playing through the story, strikes, lost sectors, adventures, and the raid just a single time is about 20-30 hours and thats a perfectly large chunk of time for a full priced game. There are plenty of amazing games that only last between 5-15 hours (bioshock being a great example). Problems ONLY start to show themselves after you do everything at least once which at that point it can argued that you have "completed" the game. And even with games like the witcher once you complete the main story and most of the sidequests there is little reason to continue to play. However comparing destiny to masterpiece open world RPGs is not fair in the slightest.
CD VS BUNGIE. BUNGIE YOU LOST!!!
I mean obviously. Even in bungies prime during halo 1-3 CD beats them hands down

                      • CDPR is totally shitting the bed on marketing for Cyberpunk 2077, though. A five year old teaser trailer and a Tweet? And now hype that they MIGHT have a demo at E3 this year? Man, GTFO with this nonsense. You know who's hyped for 2077 out of all my friends? Just me. And only because I play 2020. Bad.

                                • Unpopular opinion, but I platinumed Witcher 3 and 100% the DLCs, and I had some serious mixed feelings. Don't get me wrong it had some great story moments, Gwent was awesome - and I did warm up to some of the cast. However it was plagued by bugs for me, clunky combat, unresponsive controls at times - and I didn't like their hampering of exploration by placing overleveled enemies around even in the earlier areas of the game. It's not cool to have a level 38 griffin in an area mostly inhabited by level 8 enemies. I also didn't like that every area in the game basically had 1 or 2 quests and nothing else, once you went to a location it was very rare you went back. It seemed like an open world, but proved to be very linear in its progression, offering a slight illusion of choice. I had stupid bugs like with horse races my opponents would not be there - literally I would race alone - yeah it's a free race, but how did that make it in and never get fixed after a year of patches? I also had times where if there was opponents, they could start moving before I did. I also strongly disliked the Novigrad storyline all around - taking part in plays and listening to pub songs to find some girly boy named Dandelion is not my idea of a fun time - especially since we ALL knew he wasn't going to know where Ciri was. That entire ark of the story could have just not existed for me - however it is apparently one of the most praised in the game. To me though the game got monumentally better when I reached Skellige, that was the high point of the game for me. The dialogue was actually a huge issue. It was full of what college professors would call "verbal diarrhea" - things that could be said in 1 sentence were stretched to 6 sentences just for the sake of artificially prolonging the game. In fact Witcher 3 is about 80% story, so you will spend more time watching people talk, than actually playing a game. It really slowed the pace too much for my tastes. I don't like to put CDPR on a pedestal like most other people. They made a massive, and decent game they should be proud of - but I think I was overhyped on it by friends, so when I got to it I was like "really?" They're a developer like any other, there are flaws in their design - and I can't make a comparison to Bungie because they are even remotely the same types of developers or striving to meet the same goals. It's no doubt Witcher 3 wins the popularity vote over Destiny 2, which is a disastrous flop. But if we were to more compare to some like Square Enix and their games - which do strive to meet similar goals, I wouldn't give CDPR the win... I would rather sit down and play FF15 than Witcher 3 on any day of the week, because FF15 has alot more emphasis on gameplay. If I wanted to read a Witcher book I'd probably head to the local Coles and buy one.

                                • I've spent more time in Destiny 2 than in The Witcher 3 including all its expansions, and I've played it twice. Value for money is subjective. There is no doubt that Destiny 2 could have been better. There's no doubt Bungie mismanaged the development. There's no doubt they designed the game around loot boxes and then lied (Christopher Barrett) to us about it. Was it any less value for my money than The Witcher 3? Does CDPR deserve higher praises for their game? No. Critisism for Bungie doesn't come from a developer riding on a high horse like that. It comes from the community. What a shameless plug for CDPR to be holier than thou.

                                  • so of course anyone who enjoys RPG's in any way shape or form is going to pick CD Projekt Red. But in Bungie's defense. you put any modern dev in this poll and CD Projekt is going to win. But if you really pay attention to news out of CD Projekt, it seems it isn't all rainbows and sunshine over there and a lot of employees are unhappy with how the company conducts itself. But it is maintaining a damn good image. Obviously I can't wait for Cyberpunk. I still enjoy Destiny 2 more than most games that come out despite them not being on the same level as a CD Projekt game (in a genre that isn't comparable).

I still have to play it, The Witcher i mean, played only a couple of hours and stoped. Stoped not because i don´t like it, just it doesn´t drive me as much as Skyrim or Fallout. But back on topic, what the guy says in the interview is correct in all points and at the same very saddening that Bungie lost the respect of their piers.
