An ideology originating from the Precursors. It's original purpose and meaning lost to time. However, it is widely agreed that it involved the stewardship over life in the Milky Way. The founding concept of the Mantle is Living Time - the notion that the universe is alive and enriched by life interacting with it. The Forerunners' interpretation of the Mantle was that the most advanced and technologically evolved race in the galaxy had the burden of protecting life and fostering the growth of intelligent civilizations. Of course, this loose definition was systematically abused by the Forerunners to stamp out opposition and secure their supremacy. Interestingly, ancient humanity possessed a vaguely similar belief system known as daowa-maadthu - the roll and tug of the universe.

  • At some point I figured I’d ask you about the Hugarok but now I’d like to know more about how what the ancient humans were like.

  • Ancillary lore like Halo: Legends - The Babysitter and the description for MJOLNIR GEN2 Hellcat suggests that ancient humanity were naturally larger, stronger and smarter than current day humanity. Their speed and reflexes on par with that of SPARTAN-II's. As mentioned above, they believed in daowa-maadthu, which is essentially the concept that the universe is philosophically comparable to a broken wagon wheel. Eventually the wagon will hit a rock and fall apart. Their society was comparable to modern cultures. They had pets, had a large emphasis on sex, valued strength and prowess, and valued home. Militarily, ancient humanity in preparation of war advanced their weapons to that of the Forerunner's level, and even beyond in some cases. Ancient human particle rifles proved to be so effective, the Forerunner Warrior-Servants created the Light Rifle to combat its effectiveness. Their warships made deadly use of directed energy weapons and fibril cutters.
