I was only given the sword to do this week, and did it quickly, so now I can't even farm the mats....

If you don't have the box, you don't get the mats anymore? When you do a public event for example, they don't drop?

Yup, if there isn't a verse in your inventory, you get nothing. I think the game is bugged, when you skip or discard a verse, because I didn't get the shotgun verse after the sword was completed, having finished all missions across all toons.....
