Exclusives vs Exclusive Content

Warning: Business opinions below. If you aren’t a fan of focusing on the business side of games, leave now. ___________________________________________ I wonder how much of a profit Sony and Microsoft actually make from these exclusivity deals. Throwing money at devs to keep certain people from playing games has to be costly. Instead of totally exclusive games, why don’t devs and console makers steer more toward exclusive content in games that are available on all platforms? Say there’s a game you love playing on PS because of a certain exclusive thing, but it’s announced that Xbox is getting a different thing that you know would make you love the game even more. I know quite a few people who would buy (and have bought) the same game again on multiple consoles. I’m willing to bet people would rebuy a game just to get new exclusive content. Stuff like this already exists anyway, i.e. Destiny PS exclusive content. There should be a lot more emphasis on stuff like that. The devs would make less from the exclusivity deals themselves, but could potentially double the sales of their games. Plus console makers could continue to try and out bid each other on what exclusive content they think people would want more. Now this may not be the most practical thing ever, or even something that’s highly likely to happen, but if devs gave more reasons to make people buy multiple consoles and multiple copies of their games, everyone could make a lot more money. TLDR: Devs should want to make people buy multiple consoles and multiple copies of their games.
Also side note: I don’t care for exclusives/exclusive content. I feel like it’s a waste of time and effort for devs to actively exclude people from playing their games. But hey, they’re here to stay. Might as well lean into it with some semi-constructive ideas.
