Luke Smith: "We wanted to make a game players would leave and come back to" well they got it half right

Bungie focused so much on making us all leave they forgot about the coming back to play part....Oh wait, the DLC will do it....chit wait, that's only 3 hours and a lot of people have traded in their game or started playing other games. Hmmm, well, it was all about friendship anyway...blamit

  • He said in the podcast we want you to have excuses to come back. What person selling a product says that? I don't want an excuse I want to come back because it's fun to play.

I played for 1 week and my conclusion is; The game is pure and utter trash.. It was half a game (at best) on release. Then came the XP throttling fiasco.. How disgusting that Bungie/Activision implemented such an insidious system designed to entice (putting it nicely) people to buy Engrams.. This is something i wont forget nor support. Bungie have shown their true colours. Half a game with lack-luster DLC and shady/predatory practices. I'm done with Destiny and Bungie as a whole. Fool me once.....

    • I am confused by Luke Smith’s comment, or I think he is confused. Would not Destiny, or video games, be a hobby for both serious (hardcore) and casual players? The differences is the degree to which each commit to that hobby. Casual players are tourists of the game ... they come, go, and may return, while serious, or hardcore, players are inhabitants of the game ... i.e., the game is a daily and consistent element of their lifestyle. Isn’t it a better strategy to place primary, but not sole, focus on players who have made Destiny a daily and consistent element of their lifestyle? It seems Destiny ...IMHO ... has the wrong priorities.

      • So many people have left Destiny 2 that Amazon doesn't even have a crappy trade-in deal for it anymore. I'd say this was a hook line sinker, hooked us with D1, lined us with promises of story in D2, we played it for awhile and it sunk from assortment of issues. Problem is they have a 10 year contract. Unless D3 beta can hook people, they sunk the franchise. They know adult gamers have disposable income, so they want to give just enough to get you to buy the game. Well there's this little thing called loyalty, competition, and faith. Loyalty goes both ways, Bungie has failed us so if other competing games like Anthem, Borderlands 3 etc can get the formula right, Bungie is in for a world of hurt. At this point, all of my clan mates stated they are not going to preorder D3 because they expect even if D2 gets better at the end of year 2, they have no faith in Bungie, but do have faith that D3 at the beginning will be stripped again from all the good things that end up in D2 and still stripped of the good things from D1. Bungie isn't going to answer us, but you know what would be great? If a dev from a competing game in development would chime in buahahaha!

            • I sure wish someone would fire that idiot. Maybe instead of letting him ruin games they could put him in charge of changing the burned out lightbulbs and swapping out the empty toilet paper rolls. Anything would be fine just so long as the keep his dumb ass away from development decisions and speaking out loud.

            • I played the hell out of this game for the first 6 weeks it existed. Then I just stopped — I hit 305 on a character, I’d had a raid completion, I’d seen an Iron Banner...and I didn’t want to do any of those things twice. Whatever spark kept me going well past that point in D1 just isn’t present in D2. I can point to individual things that are better and worse by comparison between the two games, but in the end I think that Destiny 2 simply amounted to less than the sum of its parts.

And right there is his failure. It doesn't work like that in gaming Puke. When players find a better game, we move on. Combine that with totally dropping the ball as a developer interacting with your player base, and we never come back. I can't figure out if these guys are just that arrogant, or just that stupid. All I know is currently the guys at epic get this and you do not.

              • I was bored the other day so listened to the blog. They said a lot about the 'improvements' they plan to bring to the game and why the game is how it is,which was basically the list they published a month ago with a couple of extras. But the 1 thing that really stood out to me, and they have said it before is when they said (not word for word) " we got our indexing slightly wrong on who we aimed this game at, we are now learning what type of players play Destiny, we aimed this game at the tourist player and their is not enough for the hobbiest and hard core player to do". REALLY! Bungie had 3yrs of D1 game play and feedback, they had a week's Beta and it's feed back, and now they are only just learning what kind of players play this game and why! This is why it does not surprise me why a massive amount of players have left, traded the game in, or are seriously angry with Bungie.

                • They even managed to screw up the ' friendship ' part of the game (or for me at least ) Got my old Raid team back together for release of D2. Everyone was like an eager puppy waiting to consume the Campaign and grind to be raid-ready. Campaign was ok, grind was stupid as it relied on getting particular stuff to drop on a Tuesday, wtf? We go into the raid blind and do the first part in half hour or so, then we're onto the ' dogs ' . 20 mins or so later one of my team asks " Is anyone actually enjoying this? " the unanimous reply was " No", so we all bailed and I've not attempted the raid since. All those guys gave up on the game within a week or so after that. That was the end of the clan. I still play the game so joined a new clan that is currently sitting at 91 players. ( down from max capacity) Only thing is, there's only ever me and one other playing the game at the same time, lol. So I don't even have a fireteam even if I needed one, lol. Friendship my ass! Destiny one released at just the right time and had no opposition. It was fun and fresh. It captured the imagination of a lot of people . They've concentrated on how to maximise profit in D2, and neglected the most important component of their plans which is the players themselves, and most importantly, the hardcore players. I bought the deluxe version so I've got the dlc but if it was possible to turn the clock back I'd of just got a refund on the game.

                        • I remember voice chat being filled with screams of joy and excitement when Atheon dropped Mythoclast or Gjallarhorn for somebody. Not once have I heard or seen anything even remotely close to that in Destiny 2. If anything it's the opposite. Tokens. Repeat drops. Getting nothing but weapons when you need armor. Needing weapons and getting nothing but armor. Tokens giving you the same shit you just got from the raid. A lot of cursing goin' on.

Luke Smith is an out of touch, incompetent neckbeard, riding on the success of pre-destiny bungie.

                            • His quote is based on the feedback of the community. I don't understand why some of you don't get that. People hated the RNG, people hated they couldn't get certain weapons for over a year, people hated that it was too hard to be max level, people hated that quests for guns like Outbreak Prime were too difficult or too involved, people hated grinding for materials, people hated that they'd do NFs and only get ascendant materials and no gear. In summary, people hated that they had to sink in major hours doing the same activities repeatedly to get the things they wanted. So Bungie listened and simplified the process to getting everything your little heart desires and getting it much quicker. The community wanted a game they could pick up, play for a few hours here and there, and feel like they accomplished something. Bungie gave that to you. It comes at the expense of the people who put thousands of hours into D1 however because there is absolutely no reason to put that many hours into this game.

Destiny 1: We want to be THE game that you come home every night and play with your friends. Every night. We want to be the start and end of your gaming week. Destiny 2: Unno. Play it a couple times a month or whatever, don't really care. Just buy it, otherwise who gives a fuq. The last head of the game was bad. He screwed up a lot. Caused the game to be way behind in development. The guy they replaced him with isn't fit to lead a kindergarten sing along of "if you're happy and you know it... Uhh.... Uhhh... Buy an emote or something."

The best thing Bungie could have done was stay a first party developer at Microsoft and let Activision sink another developers name into the pits of hell...

Destiny in its core isn’t a good enough game to be this model because of story telling and world building. The world is convoluted and the story building and character building do not create a game that people want to know what happens next in the story. In destiny unless you research or read forums you probably aren’t positive of what happens in the game. You don’t know anything about the characters in the game. You can’t even play through the story multiple times to try and catch on more unless you scrap your character(meditations are a dumb way to limit replay ability). This is a problem if they want to wrap people up, have them leave and return for DLC, then they need to develop a new hook because it was loot and now it’s nothing.
