I've been seeing a lot of people on the right and even self-proclaimed "classical liberals" making the point that leftist's want to get rid of free speech altogether in the name of sparing themselves/others from being offended by the anti politically correct "movement". So I listened to some different points regarding this issue, and while the criticism does carry some weight I believe they aren't anymore against free speech than anyone is -- the very nature of free speech means that differing viewpoints are able to preach their beliefs to others while free from being silenced at least in theory, and so it's only natural that one side will try and silence the other.
I feel as if ContraPoints made for the most interesting watch, I implore you to keep an open mind, if you decide to watch her video.

19 RepliesLiberal logic: "Free speech is free until it hurts my feelings."

26 RepliesThey think they have the authority to classify things as "hate speech" which in their mind deserves to be censored, so no, the left absolutely does not believe in free speech.

If you make a generalization of a broad and I'll defined group, you're going to be right on some accounts, but wrong on most others. It's a frequent enough occurrence for those who would describe themselves as leftists to advocate that fascists should not be allowed to promote their views through speech, media, etc... Sometimes this is because they view the promotion of fascist views is a call to violence, which can be true. The advocated response may range from forceful suppression to peaceful obstruction of platform. Those using "physical removal" rhetoric believe the same thing about communism. I don't agree with either position. A portion of previously mentioned leftists tend to take a very... expansive... definition of fascism, including capitalism, patriotism, and really anything they believe should be demonized. There's another portion who argue that there exists a freedom from offense that precedes freedom of speech, and may advocate protecting this freedom through active suppression. The radicals of the first group, and members of the second and third is who the charge of opposition to free speech is leveled at. Many of those who would identify with the political left do not belong to those groups, but a non-insignificant number does. Whether that means the charge is valid is up to you.

Eh, not really exclusive to one side. The extremes on both sides have a ton in common and one of those things is hating free speech unless it benefits them or is pushing their view. When you see conservatives talk about leftists hating free speech, in general they're not referring to liberals but the far left groups and some of the far left "news" channels. The reason you see more of a stir about it on the conservative side of things is because of colleges and how they act toward conservative speakers.

If calling out someone for being a douchenozzle or generally an asshole to another group of people is considered censorship, then people should start putting people on full blast for being a complete dick to other people. This isn't even relating to politics at this point. The old adage: "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all" from preschool should be something everyone should have drilled into their heads. It's not cool to generalize all Muslims as terrorists, much like it isn't cool to generalize all white people as racists. Though, if someone is saying something ignorant like those two examples above, it's perfectly fine to call them out on it, because if no one calls out someone for something that's inherently wrong, they're just going to keep perpetuating it. Basically, without politics: Don't be a dick to people. If telling someone to not be a dick to others is censoring them, then they should get over it and keep their toxic thoughts to themselves.

1 ReplyThere are elements of both ends of the political spectrum that hate free speech when it suits them. That's not unique to one side, and it's only a fairly small minority of everyone, I think.

1 ReplyI don't hate free speech, I hate the abuse of free speech. Yes, you have free speech, but that doesn't mean that at every and any opportunity you have you run around spewing lies, fake news, racist remarks, homophobic remarks, death threats, and just overall bullshit because you can. Look, the constitution gave everyone an inch so they took a mile. You see a black cashier and he accidentally gives you the wrong change. That doesn't mean you call him a "stupid n****r" you tell him hey, that's the wrong change. A simple concept. The same goes for people who are gay or transgender, they hold their partner's hand in public you don't flip shit and make homophobic remarks at them, especially since straight couples do the shit all the time. You're offended by a little gay PDA? Then don't look that way, grow up. And it's not just liberals. Free speech also applies to freedom of the press, and God forbid Washington post say "Trump isn't a good President" because now the right is angry and wants them shut down. The point of the matter is the government says you can say a lot of things without being arrested, but that doesn't mean you should. It really shows who hasn't matured when someone loses self control and then refuses to apologize for their actions cause FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

Isn’t the whole point of liberalism generally supportive of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, free markets, civil rights, democratic societies, secular governments, gender equality and international cooperation? Yet people believe they hate free speech when its not true. Liberals are completely diverse and they have different views compared to your average liberal but this shouldn’t make us believe that liberals are anti free speech. It’s a lazy stereotype and a generalization that points the wrong picture of liberalism.

9 RepliesI disagree that it's natural for one to try to silence the other if both sides believe in free speech. You can't believe in it and try to silence an opposing view. If you believe in free speech you welcome and protect the right to free speech even for the opposing view. Colleges are responsible for most people believing that the left opposes free speech.
