What we wanted for the grimoire

Hi, I don't know if this will be seen, or acknowledged, or just dismissed, but I hope this reaches someone. Destiny ghost hunting was great and so much fun. More importantly, it gave us further insight into the lore of Destiny. Every mission, strike, exotic, subclass, map, it all unlocked part of the grimoire and there was so much to read and learn and absorb. It's failing? The grimoire could only be accessed through the app or the website. Not in game. We wanted the lore to be in game, rather than having to open up something else to read. Hopes were for a codex. Think about Skyrim... Every book you read could be reread from the game menu. Something similar for our grimoire would have been perfect. Rich background, history, and accessible. Instead, Bungie saw "in game" and cut the rest. The scannables have some cool snippets, but nothing so in depth and, worst of all, you have to return to the scannable to hear it again. Why couldn't they give us a grimoire entry that we can read from the game menu. Or audio clips and images that support the lore? Personally, I would like to see a grimoire accessible bottle in game and out, but in game is the clincher. Give us those blank slots that try we are missing something. Give us a goal. Make the lore rich and fulfilling again. The story for D2 was better, but without that extra stuff, it just feels flat. EDIT: I want the feel like a scholar again, poring over it, finding connections and forming wild theories... It's an RPG aspect that has sadly been lost. EDIT 2: Moved to Feedback at the suggestion. Sometimes I am a numpty.

  • We wanted it in game, we never said we wanted it gone. It lost a lot of its charm now that it is all boiled down into a teen rated game.

  • I agree to exactly what you said. But Bungie did do what was asked, they put all the lore in game. Sadly the rpg element has been removed from the frachise one update at a time. I really do miss the ghost hunt, finding everything I could on my own, then loading up a tutorial and figuring out the crazy jumps to try and get the rest.

    • Because you kids didn't elaborate what fashion you wanted "in game lore", Bungie did it their way. Maybe actually provide some ideas instead of being a bandwagon of "put the lore in-game"

      • I'm not much of a lore guy. I understand the story in a basic sense and that's it. What I do miss about grimore is that some of the cards you found, you had to kill "x" amount of enemies. Or you did so many activities. Finding ghosts and achieving the things on the back of the grimore was cool. It was just another activity to do. I too was hoping they would make a codex system in game so you can track your progress. Even something like Borderlands 2 and the badass ranking page they had. (Minus the badass points, or not) Anyways, its another missed opportunity for this game.

      • Whenever I think to how awesome the Mass Effect Codex was (in 2007!), with very detailed entries, most of them narrated, and it was always expanding as you discovered new locations, species, etc., and then I see what we have in Destiny now, I get very, very sad.

      • The community sadly got what they deserved. People come on to the companion app to complain about having to check grimoire on the companion app. I never minded it being on here, gave me something to read on my lunch break. So bungie removed grimoire and in bungie fashion replaced it with something worse. The same people that complained about having to use a companion app to read grimoire, still use a companion app to complain about everything else.

I completely agree with you, and I'll say the same thing I say every time somebody posts something like this: put it on the feedback forum! Bungie probably never check the Lore tab, if you want to draw their attention to a problem in the game (and I agree this is a problem) go to the forum made just for that. Otherwise you're just complaining to fellow lore enthusiasts and nothing ever gets done.

          • 100% believe Grimoire should still be a thing, be accessible on the app and bungie.net and in the game itself via a Grimoire section in menus. Absolute travesty that it's not like this. I also believe D1 cards should be in there to read as well. I think bungie decided to bury the Grimoire, I think I know why and to a certain extent I get it, but it's just a total cop-out.

          • Even if Bungie decided to not take the time to write extra lore for Grimoire cards, I really think it should have carried over from Destiny 1. Obviously most would prefer to have the lore with it, but I don't understand why they couldn't have at least added dead ghosts, grimoire for crucible, strikes, raids, certain enemies, guns, etc. I spent a fair amount of time working on Grimoire in D1 and had I played more PvP, I would've had it maxed (I think it was around 5400?) Grimoire would have been an excellent way for Bungie to pay homage to the Destiny veterans and could also help to sell a few extra copies of D1 when D2 newcomers decide they want to go back and play D1 for the Grimoire.

          • The most underrated part of D1, in my humble opinion, was that the grimoire was on a 3rd party app to begin with. I get why people wanted it in game and that would be nice, but one of my favorite parts of the game was unlocking the grimoire cards then going onto the destiny app to read over the lore before bed. It was relaxing. It got me invested into the destiny universe. It was just great to read over these things while in bed and it bums me out that I can’t do that on the destiny app anymore. In game is nice but I always preferred having it outside the game. That’s just my opinion on it though. Definitely in the minority on that one.

          • 100% agree with this. The game has some pretty interesting lore but lacks the execution to flush it out. Generally I would always prefer the story to reveal the lore of the game but of course that is difficult to cover everything, especially lore that isn't really something you can include in the storyline (Past events etc). Which is where a Grimoire would come into play like you said having small audio clips and maybe even images to explain small little tidbits of lore that you find from scannables and what not.

          • Personally I liked that you could read the grimoire on the app. It's much easier to read than when it's in game. Also when I'm on my console playing Destiny I want to shooting aliens not reading a wall of text. Being able to read the grimoire away from the game was a great way to learn the lore. Having said that I could appreciate why some people want it all in game and thought a lore kiosk would be a great way to do this especially if it allowed you to view cut scenes from completed missions. The new system of having lore on weapons and armour is trash. They have basically locked the lore behind and RNG wall, especially for the raid. Previously anybody that was interested could go hunting for ghosts, calcified fragments or siva clusters. Now you need to get full sets of weapons and armour on each class to get access to the extra lore. This is incredibly bad with the raid. I've gone from being someone who enjoyed seeking out the extra lore and reading it all myself to learn about the world of Destiny, to having to rely on YouTube videos to tell me the lore. By us very good but it's just not the same and a massive retrograde step. It's almost like they don't want us to get invested in the wider Destiny lore.

Bump. Ghost hunting is fun and adding collectibles like this is something for players to come back to find. For the Grimoire - copy the Mass Effect Codex. It's already a perfect format for in-game deep lore.

For f**** sake even the division did it better and far better in my personal opinion The lore of destiny used to keep me interest in the game I would read the Grimoire cards listen to the podcasts listen to YouTube but now I could not give 2 f**** about the story even if there is a story I have no idea By the way BYF set it right when he was p***** about them removing the Grimoire from the game I did not agree with him at the time but now I wholeheartedly do this is a disgrace

There should be an in game codex - like your guardian's "journal" so you can look up stuff you have scanned and have a record. I can't imagine what lore buffs and creators have to do to piece together information based on actual in game lore anymore. The out of game grimoire was fine it gave so much depth to the game and like a lot in D2 - a lot from D1 that should have carried over is gone. Dead ghosts would have been a great story and narrative opportunity. So many guardians lost so many Ghosts gone, we could have had so many to find and stories to tell "This was ______'s ghost they fell trying to help civilians escape when the red legion attacked" "this was ____'s ghost" - and it could include lore and speculation, like they saw something or have information before they fell. Speculation, Intrigue. You know, Lore. Maybe even find ghosts that can be repaired and maybe their guardian would rise again or they might find another - IDK - something. The end of the campaign is like OK the Traveler is awake... and ? Nothing. The loss of lore and grimoire in Destiny has killed the intrigue and the sense of connection to a larger and more complex setting. It leaves D2 feeling less like a sequel but a ham-handed expansion; but an expansion where you discard the game you are continuing from.

Build a in game library a literal 1, so you can access voice logs from scanibles you discover, weapon/ Armour, and exotic Lore, And make Eva Levante the vendor, who rewards unique shadars, embalms, etc.
