Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention during D1.
But it seemed to be hinted at very heavily that The Speaker was some sort of Emissary from The Traveler, and that most people, Guardians included really didn't know all that much about who or what he really was. Except that he was there from the beginning and that spoke FOR the Traveler since the Traveler was disabled. He leads The City in the Traveler's absence.
Now in D2 we discover that The Traveler never actually spoke to him, (Accorring to Destinypedia, so YMMV, I am goin to seek this out ingame) that The Speaker was actually just a Guardian (a Warlock specifically), and we learn from Scannables that there were Speakers before him, and there are several candidates to take up the mantle now.
I feel like the last part of that is a pretty major retcon of The Speaker's role. Going from an enigmatic, mysterious Religious figure, to being basically an elected leader. He went from being The Speaker, to *Insert Unknown Name*, The Most Recent Speaker. There is a fairly large difference between the two.
Am I wrong about this, what am I missing?
To be clear, I don't exactly mind this particular retcon. Just trying to see it for what it is.

they did this, because they never could get a proper idenity of the speaker

He's always been this way. Everyone thought he had a special connection to the traveler. Bungie did what I think was best. They revealed that he wasn't special, to please the speaker is evil theorists, but still gave him good intentions. A good way for the guy to die.

2 RepliesI think that he’s always been “The Most Recent Speaker,” but I agree that the way we initially perceive the Speaker is the way that our Guardian and most others perceive him. He is a religious leader (like the Pope), but I’d wager that not a lot of people actually know that. I think that the Speaker (and the whole Tower hierarchy) tries to portray him as a mystical figure, and he maintains that image by staying out of the public eye. That said, I think all this was planned specifically by Bungie. In the beginning of the game, when Ikora runs off to go find the Speaker, Zavala chooses to stay behind with the people of the Tower who need protection. I think based on this that he realizes the Speaker’s falsehood, pr at least is the only one brave enough to act upon it. Ikora is pretty much devoted based on her knowledge of the Tower’s history. Cayde... It’s hard to tell where his loyalties lie. Though irreverent, he definitely has a deeper attachment to the Traveler than he acts. It’s possible he could believe the Speaker. Regardless, I’ve always thought the Speaker was a bit of a charlatan. Even since Y1 D1, when we all thought the Speaker was Crota and the Traveler was Oryx, and that the Guardians were manipulated as agents of Darkness. TL;DR— The Speaker is probably fake, proven by Zavala’s willingness to abandon him as an unnecessary part of the Tower. He also likely deceived the majority of the population, and will continue to do so even after we know that this Speaker’s dead.

I don't have time to explain why i don't have time

No, you just misunderstood. It has always been this way.

No they retconned him. His info said there has always been an anonymous high priest. He has a unique gift with the Ghosts that no one else does. No one knows who he is. We know he had an apprentice. Saint-14. So if Speakers were being trained and replacing the old one we have questions. First why are Speakers being replaced? They don't go anywhere, so they aren't dying. Two can't be anonymous if the pupils are known to the public. So after the first replacement, everyone knows who it is. Can't have a unique connection to the Ghosts if it's a different person. So yeah. Welcome to the retcon.

I always felt the speaker was pretty much a nobody.. In D1 there was hardly to no information about the speaker, so to me he was just some fanatic poser.. and in D2 it was kind of proven that he was just someone posing as the person who "spoke for the traveler"... who made him that? Was the original speaker just some random smuck that took the role claiming he spoke for the traveler so he could get some attention? Seems like it.

My first play through in D1 my first impression of the speaker was "I'm gonna find out he's a bad guy at the end, aren't i"

Lies can be alterations of the truth as well as omissions of it. And the Speaker in Destiny 2 pretty much confronts you with Brother Vance's question: What are you going to do now that you know the Speaker is a liar?
It's not a retcon. They're furthering an established plot line.😉
