Accessing Groups via the Destiny Companion Mobile App after August 23rd 2017

As I read through the FAQ section of the Preparing for Destiny 2 help article I came across something that froze me in my tracks. It states that after August 23rd, 2017, Groups will no longer be accessible on the Destiny Companion Mobile App. This froze me because, as an admin of a group of more than 600 and a member of groups as large as 900 members, I can assure you most of us chat via the app. This change effectively closes our groups to the vast majority of our membership. I realize that Groups can be accessed through b.net with a mobile browser, but this is a difficult way to get there and awkward once you are there. I feel that this is an issue for every group that remains a group, regardless of size. Not being able to chat in groups via the mobile app will hit every group and hit them hard.

  • As someone who hasn't kept completely up to date with all the recent changes to the site, but still lurks and enjoys it, I was shocked when I downloaded the update to the App and found that I could no longer access groups. Not only are most companies attempting to move toward a more mobile integrated experience, but the Bungie community has done this very heavily over the last few years. With groups in particular, which for many years have been an ENORMOUS part of the Bungie experience, the App has become an essential part of interaction between users. It seems like a big mistake to be remove features that increase activity among your userbase. Just one users opinion.

  • Thanks for bringing this up. I will let the companion team know that this is a feature you care about and would like to see made available on the app again in the future.

    • The chat killed threads but I still like the feature. It would be appreciated if it stayed.

I made a more eloquent reply to Cozmo in the subthread but to just put it here... This is the single worst possible thing Bungie could do to groups without just outright deleting them. They need to rethink this. BEFORE it goes live. We are not the Destiny masses complaining about every little thing and contradicting ourselves. We are not giving our opinions. We are stating the fact that all these groups, that mean so much to many of us, will die, with this decision. And the people at Bungie should be distraught over this. Come on web folks. Dmg, Cortana, some of you surely must understand and be vehemently opposed to this. Help. Us.

      • Bungie, please understand how frustrating this is for us. Many members here were here during B.old. We waited in the dark. We knew urk, we saw the steak, we engaged with the Pentathlon. Hell, more than a couple probably played Halo 2 online before the servers were scrapped. We also saw the arrival of new faces due to Destiny. We saw a shift as the old community was gently coaxed to make room for the newbies. And now, we're pushed to the fringes, again waiting in the dark for some signs of life. We need you to burn bright and to burn very, very blue right now. Not in the "future", but before this switch is flipped. This messaging feature may seem like something small, but to the Septagon this can mean the world. Please don't leave us in the dark in your journey to the stars. There's too much history just to throw it all away.

Groups here are based on decade old tech, they've told us this much. Moving forward with D2, Bungie want Clans to mean something more. To do this they're shelving the old tech and upgrading to a new system. This new system has its limitations ie: 100 members max. All I see here is a bit of bellyaching. If each of your members are so keen to remain part of your community, they will have no issues migrating to a 3rd Party App like Band. Here's an example of how I would do it if my community was 900 members strong: 1) Appoint 9 Admins. 2) Have your Admins Create 9 Destiny clans numbered 1-9. (Assume your group is called Dumplings... you'll have "Dumplings Chapter 1" through to 9). 3) Create a Dumplings Band on Band. 4) Invite all your Dumplings. On Destiny App/bnet, yes your community is split. However, you share the name and you're all together on Band. ...problem solved... although new problem... I'm craving dumplings...

        • I only use b.net through mobile. Ever. This is a terrible decision. The app was a brilliant move by the web team. Why remove vital features???

          • The group chat for the mythic members group is the only reason i come to bungie any more. I only use it on the app. If this is taken away i will no longer use the site or app. If this is taken away the mythic members of bnet will finally be lost. We have discussed this topic very heavily and we all feel the same. Feel as tho bungie is finally trying to shut us up :((((( I think this seals the deal we arent going to get our mythic emblem for destiny 2. The emblem is the whole reason i played the game so long. I didnt enjoy the beta that much because i didnt have my emblem. Mythic emblem made me feel good and was an actual thank you from bungie that i appreciated very much. Keep group chat in app and carry the bungie emblems over please. yorkie

I check up on groups every day with the mobile app, but I havent opened the website in ages. I dont think Ill use the mobile app for much without groups either. It would be a shame to see all these communities move elsewhere.

Please keep the group mechanic as is, Bungie! Before the release of Bnet mobile, web browsing chat was acceptable. But after the release of mobile, the ease of group chatting through the app has made things awesome! Reconsider your actions!

              • I completely agree. You have groups like Community Carnage that NEED the in-app messaging to advertise community game nights.

              • Yeah, I run a group that is way over the membership cap to convert to a clan, and I wouldn't want to ax people in order to do that anyways. It'd kill off so much of our history, limit our ability to grow, etc. As it stands my group will die because of this decision. We've been an active part of the community for years. This decisions is essentially flipping the bird to the core of the B.net community that has been here for years. They're the last people you should be trying to piss off if you want to keep the community intact. This decision is so unbelievably shortsighted it's almost comical. They're taking away features that the community has grown around in an extremely positive way. It makes no sense.

                • The only way I access my groups is through my phone on the companion app. It's much more of a hassle to get on my computer and check in on groups, and I don't always have access to a computer. With the companion app, I'm able to chat with group members and keep up to date with anything happening. With some of the larger groups, it would be difficult to get everyone on the same page and onto an entirely different mobile app in order to communicate. Please reconsider removing this feature. It's an extremely useful tool and makes life much easier.

                • Recommendation is to utilize the app called Discord. It's quick, painless to sign up, and has a lot of the core functionalities for a lot of groups. Phoinix Gaming has multiple games across multiple consoles including PC with over 1,000 total members. Admin's are able to create their own discussions based on games and subtopics which makes it easy to keep track of things and people. It also is a lot easier since it's free and takes little space on someone's phone. I recommend that.
