Strength of the Pack S3 Ch. 20: The Guardian Crisis

Dakota led his team, the Wolf Pack, down the great Hall of Guardians. They came to a stop at the end of the Vanguard table and waited patiently. A holographic map of the City spun around above the table, but Commander Zavala chose to look at the City through the window at the back of the chamber. The titan's polished armor clattered against each other as he turned and approached the group. "Captain Carter told us that you assisted them in facing the rogue..." The Commander said. "Yes, Sir. We saw him," Dakota replied. "She also said you let him get away..." The titan added as he read the expressions on the Guardians' faces. "Um, 'let' is a strong word, Sir..." Blake spoke up. "What do you know about this infected Guardian?" Zavala asked as he looked up at the team. Dakota glanced down to Kourtney, who was still bright red from sobbing. "We believe, it might be Alan Moores..." Cayde whipped around when he heard Dakota. "What?!" He exclaimed. "My boy can't be that S I V A S O B!" "He did crash in the Plaguelands after the second battle of the Dreadnought..." Ikora interjected before lowering her head. "And he wasn't in his ship when we found it..." Blake added. Zavala held his hand to his chin, thinking. "How can you be sure about this?" He finally asked. "The Guardian is definitely a hunter, and the armor configuration matches Alan's--however, the SIVA makes that hard to tell. Lastly, this Guardian has resisted arrest from most members of the City Guard... but us. Instead, he ran from us. He didn't even try to engage us," Dakota continued. Everyone let the news sink in for a moment. "That's still Alan down there!" Kourtney yelled, breaking the lingering silence. "He's defending himself!" "Then who killed a citizen of the City?..." Commander Zavala asked rhetorically. No one had an answer. The Speaker walked around the several Guardians, listening to their arguments. "With his SIVA augmentations, there is no guarantee that he is the same 'Alan' that was once on your team, Captain. He is as much of a threat as anyone else, and we can't have any exceptions in our protocol for the safety of the City... even... in the case of someone close to us," "The Speaker is correct. When in the face of the protection of the City, it is our duty to maintain protocol," Zavala said. Wolf Pack panicked as the Concensus seemed to turn against them. "Now, wait a minute!" Cayde yelled. "They have a point, too! There's nothing saying Alan isn't in control of his actions. The fact that he refuses to fight his own team means he is able to pick and choose with free will. He might still be Alan," Now, the debate was getting heated. Zavala nodded to two frames, which shut the doors and isolated the Vanguard Hall. "It was also mentioned that a very intelligent Guardian is pulling the strings here. There is a very high possibility that Alan is just a Trojan horse, for this exact reason. We think we can trust him, we bring him in, the trap springs and he betrays us. We can't take chances when the odds are so far from being in our favor," the Speaker replied. "Maybe so, but we can't just kill him either!" Cayde yelled. "We can't go around gunning down everyone who waves the Jolly Roger!" "Cayde!" Zavala shouted, his blue face glowing cyan with rage. "Because maybe, that Jolly Roger was taped to his hand!" Cayde continued. "CAYDE!!" Zavala yelled after punching the table, causing many of the decorations to jump. "You are excused from the council," Zavala demanded. The hunter rushed to the door. "Keep me posted," he whispered to Dakota. "We should let cooler heads prevail," Ikora said. "Maybe, immediate elimination does seem, hasty." Both Commander Zavala and the Speaker began to ease up. "We can't see the larger picture. The Darkness looms over all of us," the Speaker said. "Make this decision wisely, Commander," The white robed man walked out of the chamber, leaving Ikora, Zavala, and the Wolf Pack. "Both Cayde and the Speaker have excellent arguments. There is no way to say Alan is fully converted, but he is still a threat to the safety of the City. Captain... this is not a decision I am making lightly..." Zavala took a deep breath. "...Effective immediately, I am putting up a bounty for his arrest, but execution is permitted if necessary," Dakota staggered back, and Kourtney instantly got choked up again. Effective immediately, every Guardian assigned as City Guard was permitted to kill Alan on the spot. "We'll... We'll bring him in, Commander..." Dakota said before weakly walking out of the room, followed by Blake and Kourtney. The team walked out onto the Tower plaza. Dakota's eyes shifted around in his head as he thought. Kourtney, standing behind the titan and warlock, tried to wipe away her tears. "What... do we do?" She asked. "We're under orders..." Dakota replied. "What?! We can't kill Alan!" Kourtney shouted back. "Captain, he's a Wolf like us. Kourtney's right, we can't betray him like this..." Blake said as he crossed his arms. "I agree... But, any effort to help Alan will, not only put him at more risk, but will make it seem we are working with the SIVA as well..." Dakota said as he placed his hands on the railing of the Tower. "So, we don't," Blake said as shrugged his arms. "What?" Dakota asked as he turned around. "We don't have to help Alan... but that doesn't mean we're obligated to catch him either..." Blake continued. Kourtney had to think about what the titan was saying, but Dakota caught on quickly. "Alan could always 'slip' through our hands," the warlock said with a smile.
