One of the worst things to happen in the last several decades:
Everything is an opinion now. There's no objective facts or reality. There is no truth.
Vaccines cause autism? Opinion.
The Earth is round? Opinion.
Things evolve? Opinion.
Climate change happens? Opinion.
A crazy dude shot and killed a bunch of school children? Opinion.
A bunch of terrorists [mostly from Saudi Arabia] flew planes into the World Trade Center buildings and killed thousands of Americans? Opinion.
Donald Trump received fewer votes than Hillary Clinton? Opinion.

It's because empiricism is dying in America. This started after the 1964 Seattles Worlds Fair and coincidentally when the Baby Boomers began questioning the helpfulness of science and technology. Polls prior to the Baby Boomers showed that when Americans were asked if Science is helpful showed an 80%+ response of yes. This number has decreased dramatically since the Boomers began responding to the poll. Instead they prefer emotional and feeling based response. Now we have politicians and people in the general population that start debate with " I am not a scientist" and should stop right there, but instead continue and create policy.

the google effect is well documented, it makes people like op dumber and more susceptible to outlandish ideas including claims. thats why there are so many spherebeibers and fedoratippers that believe the climate isn't supposed to change.

As far as I know, the "vaccines cause autism" thing isn't the sole reason people are against (some) vaccinations. For me personally, it definitely isn't that. One of the main reasons is not trusting big pharma. You can have a problem with that, sure, but it's significantly different than being scared of vaccines because of a debunked claim.

One one hand it means everybody's voices can be heard equally. On the other hand it means that everybody's voices can be spread. 40 years ago you'd have to get into the newspaper, go on TV or write a book to get your voice heard in the next county. Nowadays I can put something on Facebook or twitter and anyone in the world can see it instantly. I can find other like-minded people and we can form a group. We can organise and concentrate our ideas. We can advertise and eventually popularise them when we have enough people. We can get into arguments with other people over them. If those ideas are based on falsity, we are in essence changing how people view facts so that they see them as not facts but as just 'sides' to a debate. If one person tells you that 9/11 was faked, you might brush them off as an idiot. But if you see a whole group of people arguing the position with 'evidence' you're more likely to take them seriously as a voice, and therefore the situation stops being about verifying facts, it's about defending a side, because either you agree with one mass of people or the other mass of people.
