Pre-ordering hurts all gamers.

In the last five years or so, we have seen an alarming rise in the release of half-baked, full-price AAA releases. Essentially, we are the PAYING beta testers these days. Developers and publishers will always try to maximize profit by cutting corners, using cheap networking, and creating amazing hype. Trying to convince us to buy sight-unseen (except what THEY want you to see). By NOT preordering, we send the message that we'd rather wait and see. Essentially, we're choosing to make informed decisions based on the ACTUAL GAME, rather than the hype-candy we're fed leading up to release. This holds devs to a much higher standard at launch and in the several months following launch. Imagine the quality of game we would get if publishers and developers knew that their profits would be solely dictated by sales AFTER launch, based on the actual -blam!-ing game they made; not the hype, and not the reviews of people in their pockets. Pre-ordering hurts all gamers. Kotaku article on the subject: https://www.kotaku.com.au/2015/06/stop-preordering-video-games/

  • I agree to some extent. Destiny sure pre ordering is a really risky thing to do since the first one still 3 years in has a lot of problems. But with certain companies like Bethesda they to me have proven reliable with games like skyrim fallout and red dead redemption. But yes blindly preordering like you can't get it day one otherwise is just bad and frankly seems more of the new gamers tend to do this. Vets seemed to have learned that lesson already But I feel the same way towards games which then charge real money to acquire certain in game stuff I don't buy into that either it seems wrong and very abusive though I don't argue their right to do it I just buy into it.

      • Much like getting burned by Destiny 1 and the Expansion Pass bait and switch that was the House Of Wolves DLC? I think we'll see way lower sales on D2 that with ttk this time. The hardcore is all that's left

        • generally speaking i agree but destiny is a proven product. whether you like the product or not is a different story. we know the game play, the visuals, the baseline of what we are getting based off destiny 1..and since i am beyond sick of repeating destiny 1, getting d2 is a no brainer based SOLEY off knowing ill be getting at the very least the same gameplay.. but i didnt preorder d1 for all the reasons you listed basically.

          • This puts me in a difficult position. In a sense I'm feeding the machine, because I want to be able to play the beta. The beta will be the ultimate decider for me personally. I simply cannot wait for reviews because there are so many agendas... but even that is flawed to some degree, as with Destiny one, The beta let us to believe that there would be large open maps in PVP, to have them removed later in the game and re-introduced in a limited fashion. I hope there is more that we haven't seen, or at least a roadmap that may introduce some desired features for the community.

                • Most of these posts have little to no basis in fact, and are powered by cynicism and click bait articles. Pre-orders account for less than 30% of overall sales, and if one couldn't pre-order, it would be a launch day/week purchase - when reviews still have a positive vibe to them and scores aren't fully released. The other 70% are post launch sales, when the game pretty much speaks for itself and sells on its own merit. Why would devs "get lazy" when there is alot of pre-orders? The sales cycle is typically an initial buzz when it's first available for preorder, then a steady trickle until about a month or two before release. So these "big numbers" that everyone talks about don't really happen until it's about to launch, way too late to make any appreciable changes like removing content. Waiting for reviews is never a bad thing, but if I liked the previous game, it's a pretty safe bet I'll enjoy the next (unless they completely change the format - fps into tps, or strategy game into an rpg/mmo) Factor in that's it not uncommon for devs to have performance bonuses in the contract based on things such as review scores and sales. Finally, a bad game is a bad game even it's 100% done and bug free. The biggest issues are meeting hard deadlines and demands for more content. This can be challenging given the size, scope, and complexity of today's games. So why are there so many "bad games?" Mostly because not every game can be "good" statistically, and only 4% of games produced will return a significant profit.
https://www.google.com/amp/kotaku.com/5098356/only-20-of-games-make-a-profit---eedar/amp
More games produced = better chance for a "good" one, since this market can be quite fickle. To give some perspective, the NES had only about 700 liscensed titles during its 10 year run, whereas today we have about that many console games released every year, a 10 fold increase. In conclusion, there are many factors involved with incomplete and bad games, none of which have anything to do with pre-orders and not for the sinister reasons you think. They are just trying to keep up with today's demand for bigger games and steady drip of content.

I agree, but I only come into money every once in a great while cause I gotta pay them bills, so sometimes for me it's just necessary, and also at the end of the day, most of the gaming community is pretty ignorant to the gaming community. So it would be really hard to actually achieve that. But, at the end of the day you are right!

I really want to play the new and improved subclasses as soon as humanly possible. So when these two factors align...there is no stopping my pre order. Sorry, the rest of the gaming community. My bad.

I did not have a problem with preordering fallout 4, or Skyrim SE, or even Rise of Iron. I still see your point, all I have to know is that Mass Effect, to agree.

                                        • I don't think you're entirely wrong but I think you're giving too much weight to the impact that pre orders has. Advertising is a huge influence and whether people pre order or purchase after release is irrelevant if they aren't waiting for reviews. But not everyone can wait and even then there are typically varying ratings convoluting a buying decision. Another major factor is digital content. For a long time a game was whatever it shipped as. That is no longer the case. Aside from patches and updates, the industry has to figure out how to handle additional paid content. These change what qualifies as a shippable product with day 1 patches being more frequent. Ultimately the people preordering are the individuals that would be initial buyers if the game couldn't be pre ordered. Except where pre order incentives are offered but I consider that more in the advertising category.

                                        • i have to agree, (and not just D2). That pre-ordering tells game companies that they can have our money but we won't care about the quality of the game and features in it. The last game i pre-ordered was Dragon Age 2 and was that a heck of a mistake just thinking because it was Bioware how could it be bad.

                                          • im not sure how a pre order is a problem, your either going to buy the game or your not. majority of people who pre order probably really enjoyed or love the destiny franchise. i personally wasnt going to pre order or even buy destiny 2 because i hit a wall. then i sat back and thought about all the memories and friendships it created and the ammount of enjoyment over time compared to any other game. i think players that continually come back here with issues over anything to do with bungie, need to have a think about why they are actually here.
