At this point I'd settle for them just giving us the option to rent a dedicated server from a third party and pay for a stand alone server (like you can with many pc games)

They can't do that, because they fear a) reengineering b) you still would need Bungie to host your characters c) manipulation of loot and characters d) hacking of servers with knowledge gained from private servers
