You could look at Light as the Traveler being 'the Ocean' and then all the shards being 'lakes' or 'ponds'. Water, from the ocean, is lifted into the air upon evaporation. This gets turned into clouds, then storm clouds when enough water is accumulated (or the clouds go up against a high elevation), and the rain comes down. That happens enough, you could form ponds. Those ponds could all lead to a lake over time and so on. So... let's the the Cabal build a giant dome around all the ocean ever (not practical, but you get it). No more water reaches other places. However, the lakes and ponds continue this effect. This is all assuming that ground water isn't a thing. Lol That, in a sense, is the Light. The Light was cut off from us when the Traveler was captured. We could no longer tap into it. So, we found a smaller source of Light, but still the same Light, that could provide. As you get further and further away, unless water sources already exist there, the water will be less and less prevalent. This is the same as the Light. -- Now... the question would be, is Light stronger when it is more consolidated in one area? Or would it be more beneficial to cut the Traveler into little bitty pieces and scatter the shards everywhere so you always had a source of Light. Well, not the whole Traveler, but tear off a few dozen shards and hide them in special places. Remember, the Traveler was basically dead, so unless it's more powerful when it comes back to life... I see no downside to doing that. Of course, it's very likely that the Light is more powerful the more alive the Traveler can be. So, just a thought. But, since all Light is supposedly connected... this also causes a weakness. One shard gets out of hand and we saw what the Hive could do. They used the Shard as a sieve against the Traveler, which reveals a connection of sorts. Which is interesting... because does that mean when a shard is cut off from the Traveler, does it have a finite amount of Light? Or does it always still pull Light from the Traveler? Can the shard still connect to the Traveler even though that Cabal shield ship is around it? Or is the shard a permanent new source of Light... I don't think so, because we sent the Shard back for a reason. Just conjecture.

  • The traveler is just tech . It's a machine. Don't expect to find out exactly where it came from and what the link between the traveler and the speaker etc . They don't have time to explain why they don't have time to explain .

  • I can agree with that. Perhaps "Magical" Technology. The Fallen (I am very sure) refer to the Traveler as "The Great Machine". Which leads me to this question: Are the Fallen really our enemies? They could easily think we stole this God Servitor from them, so they react harshly and over time without light, their leadership fell apart hence the Fallen Houses fighting each other. Is it possible the Fallen will prioritize the Cabal as their greatest enemy now over us? Will there be a sort of possible team up with the House of Judgement?
Are the Fallen really our enemies?
IIRC from my incredibly limited knowledge of the lore the Fallen see everyone that wants the Traveller as their enemies because they want "it" back for them. I could be completely wrong though.

  • Well, the answer to the question about light decreasing the farther you are from the source, is most likely untrue. Tolands journal states that "if we passed through the dreadnought's deepest layers, our light would be as a dying sun". But it also says that is ONLY because oryx's darkness whatever is blocking it. It says nothing about distance.

  • From Ghost Fragment Cabal, said by a Ghost trapped in a Cabal base on Mars
I have stayed with the Cabal, even as the Light in me dims - I have been too far from the Traveler for too long.
So it's clear that the range that ghosts can draw on the Traveller's Light has a limit. There's no reason this doesn't also apply to Guardians.

    To quote from [armory]Graviton Forfeit[/armory]: {Doesn't matter how good you are–you stay out there too long, you're not coming back. Not the same way you left, anyway. - Tevis}

    He had a couple grammatical mistakes though. One spelling mistake as well. [Let's] instead of [Lest].

  • I think the traveller is the router and shards are the wifi range boosters.

  • This is where the theory of Ulan Tan comes in, he stated that all Light remains connected across space and time, which is how the Hive were managing to drain the Light from the Traveller despite being on the Moon. The Shard still has that connection to the Traveller, though less Light probably can flow through it. Our Guardian also seems to have a much stronger connection to the Light than any other Guardian current or past.

  • I think that the shard can only be used as a sieve if paracausal forces are at work, as is the case with the hive. Therefore, a shard of the Traveler not under their influence is more an oasis than a liability.
