  • His post is absolutely hyperbolic. There's faulty pieces in all mass produced electronics, it just is. But let's be real, Nintendo purposefully produces an extremely limited number of machines so they can say they're sold out world wide. It's not at all impressive when you're making a decision to only produce hardware at a 1/3 (not a factual number) the rate of your actual production capacity. Had Nintendo not seriously limited it's own production of these machines it's highly unlikely they'd be sold out.

  • I think Nintendo understands supply and demand better than most people.

  • I think they're just tone deaf.

  • Its pretty smart actually. They guarantee day 1 sales numbers are high. By creating a feeling of exclusivity and high demand they get the sales of people who might normally wait months or years to buy. Then when the second shipment comes a couple months later it sells out too because that fear of missing out is still there. Not saying its right, just that it works.

No you're absolutely right, it does work. But I also think it's becoming less effective since people know Nintendo does this on purpose. From what I'm seeing it seems that this practice is starting to piss off more people than it pushes to buy a Switch. That's what I meant by them being tone deaf. Just as an example the research group SuperData is estimating that the switch will only sell 5 million units in it's first year. Xbox 1 dropped November 22, 2013. By December 31, 2013 they had sold 3 million units. In a month they sold 3 million with the xbox360 still going strong, still being unimaginably popular. Ps4 did even better somehow, again that's with the ps3 still getting new games and going strong. Since then Xbox has averaged about 10 million units per year, and the ps4 is averaging a little over 15 million units per year. I'll be interested to see how many units Nintedno sells this month and to see if sales will maybe pick up after E3 closer to Mario, but Sony and Microsoft achieved those initiall sales numbers without limiting supply, so it makes me wonder how well Nintendo would have done if they just produced a shit ton and sold them, even if they didn't sell out. Ps4 and Xbox never sold out like the Switch has, but they still moved more units than the Switch is projected to. So I'm not really sure their scarcity practices are helping them move units anymore. Edit: wow just noticed I used the word units like 50 times.

  • Last I heard as of Tuesday (March 14 2017) Nintendo had sold over 1.5 million units.

  • Ok so that estimation of 5 million is probably on the low side then. Awesome, I hadn't heard they were doing that well. Well that blows a giant -blam!-ing hole in my argument lol, but I'm glad to hear it's doing well so far. Personally I'm waiting until it's a bit closer to Mario to pick on up.

  • Well when you only sell like 4 systems, yeah you're gonna sell out. I could sell my literal shit on eBay, but only have one turd available. If someone bought that, I could go around proclaiming I sold out of turds. It would have the same merit as Nintendo selling out of switches.

They always do make a small amount of consoles for sale on launch day so they can sell out to build hype. Might come back to bite them this time though from the problems ive been hearing. Don't understand why they intentionally release it with low production instead of just producing loads of them to fill the supply.

  • It's "Nintendo" man...Slap that name on the side of a polished turd and fanboys will buy it...Oh, wait they already did and called it the "Switch". "Flippers" were making mad money selling them on eBay. People were paying $600 for it...? lmao.
