It's one of the best games ever, probably the best Castlevania ever made. This is the game that really coined the term "MetroidVania", though of course the Metroid games helped as well.

Are there any other games outside of Metroid and Castlevania that fit the genre well? Does Terraria count or would that be giving it too much credit

Oh yea absolutley, the recent game Axiom Verge, cave story, the 2014 version of Strider, Rogue Legacy, Xenodrifter, even Batman Arkham Origins and the new Tomb Raider games could be considered metroidvania. Idk about terraria I've never played that.
