Ugh. I hate the party system, it just promotes brashness and lack of critical thought. How about you stop considering yourself one side or another (yes, you, the person reading the comment) and get all your views out into your mind. Then, make that your system of beliefs. Note conservative, not liberal, not republican, not democrat.
And if you've already done that, well, do it again! no point in not updating your beliefs
What happens when people of similar beliefs band together to organize? That's how political parties are formed. Party politics and factionalism have always existed. I do agree that it can get out of control. I think it is now. Especially with the Republican Party. But I don't think it's the party system that has to go away. Political parties exist in every democracy for a reason.

  • The greeks, the guys who came up with the idea of democracy? yah those guys, they cautioned that a party system would simply not work. People would become lazy and start voting off of parties instead of beliefs. I dislike parties in general because of one word instead of another:
What happens when people of similar beliefs band together to organize? That's how political parties are formed. I think there is a lot of wisdom in looking through history and learning its lessons. This is one of those comparisons that isn't the case. By modern standards we wouldn't classify Athens as a democracy. You have political parties today for a number of reasons. One is they simply make it easier to vote. Elections are also much larger, more complicated, and ultimately enfranchise everyone rather than a sliver of the population making the need for organization more important. And let's say we were to get rid of political parties. What would it change? Voting blocs form. Factions emerge. Athenian democracy was no different in that regard. There's this romantic idea people have that if we just got rid of the partisanship what would emerge would be a council of wise philosopher kings that govern by consensus. That's a nice thought but it is not real nor has it every been. I'm not saying partisanship can't get out of control. It absolutely can. I think it is in America right now. You also need to take the quotes about political parties from guys like Washington into their historical context. Democracy was new at the time. The notion of an Opposition Party holding the government to account was radical, uncomfortable, and viewed as being treacherous. Today we think of it as healthy.
