I agree that dedicated servers will be a must for D2, especially if its 60 FPS. However, before we even get there, if PVP isn't fully separated from PVE balancing, I won't even consider buying D2. And if they don't return to how things were in Y1, with some minor tweaks to make it more casual friendly (allowing max light outside of raid, no gear goes irrelevant because of new DLC, and optional matchmaking or other system to help players connect), then I won't be buying Destiny 2 either. IMO, the game has been going in the wrong direction since the launch of TTK.

  • That depends on if you are a casual player or not. If you are a casual player, then you are likely fine with how things are because the game basically caters to you and spoon-feeds you. However, Consider that Destiny is a LOOTGRINDER FPS. Also consider the fact that in transitioning from Y1 to Y2, Bungie nerfed both the loot AND the grind - so that all we are grinding for are levels, which are entirely meaningless in 90-95% of the games content (it really only matters in the nightfall, raid, IB, and trials, and 50% of that content is now irrelevant). Raids are irrelevant, as are nightfalls. Why? They only give you infusion fuel you can get elsewhere, and they do not provide any elite-level RNG drops. So why would anyone ever actually want to do one? Even if they're fun, you just do a few for novelty, and never do them again - same as we did in Kings Fall. No need to run them 80+ times like we did in Y1 to get the best loot in the game. Quests for exotics are good, but too much of a good thing can be bad too. Questifying almost every exotic, including the ones considered "elite" means those items are removed from the drop table of difficult activities like raids and nightfalls, which further decreases incentive to play them repeatedly. In all fairness, the best loot in the game should be reserved for those who complete the hardest content in the game. Does this put loot out of reach for some players? In the short term, perhaps, but in the long term, I'd like to think players would eventually get these weapons. So long as weapons aren't forced to go obsolete, what does it matter? I've never had someone be pissed off that a certain weapon/item is hard to get, but I DO know that what pisses people off the most is when they grind for items repeatedly, FINALLY get it, only to have it go obsolete a couple weeks later. That just isn't right. This is where Y2 went off in the wrong direction and where Y1 had it right. Sure, Y1 may have been unfriendly to casuals, but that could have been addressed through adding in other ways to get casuals/solos connected with other solos/casuals to do this content. They could also stop forcing things to go obsolete every time they drop a new DLC (which infusion did in the short-term, but I think its far from a perfect system). Bottom line is this: In terms of PVE, this game is an FPS lootgrinder. We should expect that the best gear in the game is hard to get. We should also expect that you have to complete the hardest content in order to get the best loot. But we have strayed WAY TOO FAR from those principals in Y2, and so I can never say "Y2 was a step in the right direction." In terms of storyline? yeah, its a good step. In terms of game fundamentals? Terrible. Strikes aren't PVE meat and potatoes. Raids and the nightfall are endgame content and should yield endgame-quality rewards.

Ahh Lonestar, here to remind us that we forgetting about PVE, and for good reason, it is 50% of the experience in Destiny, maybe more. I think that I will write a detailed post about how I feel that dedicated servers could benefit PVE specifically.

  • For the record, I would have loved dedicated PVE servers during the Skolas era when 75% of my 35 runs ended in multiple-repeated netcode error kicks and we rage quit rather than subject ourselves to continuous torture. It was poor foresight to make content that was that difficult without guaranteeing that netcode/connection issues wouldn't plague the content OR without having checkpoints at least SOMEWHERE in there to save people's progress in the event that something crappy DID happen. It might also resolve at least a few raid glitches we suffer from due to lag...

  • I think the number of requests happening in raids it's pretty close to what is going on in the crucible... People tend to brush the raid glitches under the table, and act like they weren't serious issues, but I remember specifically spending much more time fighting with the technical side of the game, than the challenge itself.

  • For sure. When level 32 was the cap, Crota was a 45 minute raid. The unfortunate thing about the raid was that due to lag and game glitches, you took 20 minutes getting to Crota, and fought lag and glitches for the next 3-4 hours sometimes before people got fed up and quit or before you actually killed him. Granted, Crota gave us some of the most hilarious glitches in the game, but he was also by far and away one of the most frustrating bosses to kill - primarily because of glitches and lag issues. And of course, because its PVE content, nobody seems to care....

  • I remember being up on the platform with him, being invisible, and never knowing if he would just slam me anyway... I also will never forget the sword completely disappearing from my hands... Lol

  • Yeah I often went to swing the sword on the first down and the sword would disappear and I'd shoot a rocket into Crota's noggin and blow myself up instead! OMG, the frustrations when that would happen on the third rotation... But by far, the funniest glitch in Crota was when he would chase the swordbearer off the platform and into the ogre room, and if everyone survived, he would be running around in the lower courtyard area LOL
