It seemed so easy — just continue what was set-up by Greg Bear back in 2012. Now, instead, we're fighting to stop Judgement Day at the hands of Skynet. Precursors and the return of the Forerunners are getting further and further away as the series progresses. Story arcs that should've been implemented into the games are instead used in graphic novels and vice versa. Sad times when a spin off narrative is more interesting than that of the mainline games. Surely they can't fumble Halo Wars 2.

Seriously. 343i wants Halo to last for at least another 20 years. What can you do after you've taken on the Precursors? How do you escalate the threat further than entities older than the universe? Or what about the old Forerunners reconciling with humanity? Where do you thematically go when you've resolved the bad blood that literally caused every conflict humanity has had to go against thus far in the franchise? There's room in the story for what's happening right now, but the issue is that the narrative transition was handled so poorly and abruptly.

But you don't actually know this, it's just what everybody hopes will happen so that the newer games can finally realign themselves with the older games and form a coherent, synergistic plot. 343 wanting Halo to last for the next two decades is great, but not at the expense of the quality of the games. As hyperbolic as it sounds, practically everything in Halo 5 feels like it was spun out of nothing within less than a year to go before launch. Honestly, what sense is there in establishing a series of well thought out characters and storylines in your first game only to set them on the backburner in the next to establish a different set of characters and storylines which have seemingly materialised out of thin air, save for a poorly received web series which takes major liberties with the preexisting canon? It's pretty telling when your ad campaign is more compelling than your actual story. Going back to the Forerunner Saga — at the time, it was being written to coincide with a trilogy of games, the Reclaimer Trilogy. 343 have now decided that they don't want a trilogy, they want a saga; there isn't any leeway in Greg Bears novels to stretch them across a saga of games, it was very clear in the books where we were and where we're going. So now, in a seemingly unbelievable turn of events, we have filler games in the numbered Halo series masquerading as legitimate sequels. Halo 5 is a bona fide Terminator fanfic. So no, there really isn't room for Locke, his retinue of goobers and the desecration of one of the most beloved supporting videogame characters. As for ODST... when? It was announced when many thought that Halo was done, and was certainly overshadowed by Reach thereafter.
