Do you always play the meta? And if not, are you really playing to win?
Just watched a vlog all about getting better in Crucible by Mercules904.
Can't remember all of his steps, but the first 2 were changing your controller settings and second, play the meta.
This disheartens me. What is the current meta and why the hell is it so important, if you want to play to win?
Destiny throws around the word "meta" when they mention any heavily played weapon in the Crucible, i.e. it's the weapon(s) everyone is using at the moment.
Research says the Primary meta is bullet hoses like Doctrine, Pulses like the Grasp or PDX-45, HCs like the Palindrome & Eyasluna, and MIDA. Secondary meta is Felwinter's Lie tier shotties; nothing else.
I'm disheartened because what does this mean for a player that doesn't like all of those meta weapons. Do I toss aside my heavy hitting HCs like Ill Will and mid range ARs (88/8 such as the awesome Extremophile) to follow the norm?
What loadout do you normally take into the Crucible? Are you a meta-breaker like myself and if so, do you feel you are getting a jaded experience because the meta is flooding everyone's opinion of weapons?

Used the meta in HoW - had a 1.6KD that was constantly rising Started using only what I had fun with in Taken King - KD dropped to around a 1.3 I don't really care that people say "it's the player not the meta" in my case it is not. Using the meta gave me a clear leg up on the competition especially those that did not use meta. It's a shame but the meta really is the only way to compete. There's a very small amount of players that can stick to a high KD without meta weapons and those are the truly good players.

My set ups are: Last word + longbow No land beyond + iron wreath D Hawkmoon + Conspiracy theory D Monte Carlo + Event Horizon Ace of spades + 1k stare Some are meta some aren't but they're fun which is why I play the game.

No, I use a sniper. I shined in halo 3, so it's not the infamous "camping in the back of the map" game-style everyone seems so defensive about. Playing this way is torture lately, but I returned due to ROI after 6 months away and will likely stop again shortly. This just doesn't happen to be my meta. I'm not happy when I dominate and I'm even less happy when I lose, so there's clearly a personal issue. There's something endearing about Destiny for sure, but it wears off until I feel like giving Bungie money again.

There's only two times I've ever actually played the meta and that would've been in year one, and now. But year one back when auto-rifles were something. Back in the times were HRoF autos were nothing compared to mid rare of fire. I would always load out with my Pest-Control Matrix even when it changed and hand canons ruled the crucible, and when shotties would wait around the corner. I only ever got good with my matador towards the end of year one and then I got my sidearm. Then in year two after autos had really been nerf'd to death I picked up the Mida for the first time and it's really good, I [i]guess[/i] it counts as meta, but it has always been the most consistent gun in destiny. My loadout all of year two would be the Mida and a sidearm. Now they reintroduced the matador but I'm having so much more fun with the proud spire and in IB with supremacy, it is better to be a shottie.

1 ReplyI've been running Bad Juju/shotgun primarily since TDB. Still don't see that changing for me anytime soon. I'll deviate depending on the situation, but this is still my go-to.

Whatever guns I'm using, I'm using because I WANT to use them, not because the community demands it. Went in with Hawkmoon and Shadow of Veils yesterday, pretty fun match.

Whatever weapons my characters are carrying as I'm constantly switching between matches. (Can't use the same weapons for more then one game. Look at my characters to see what I use)

I play my own load out, no matter what the matter. I am generally an auto rifle guy. Secondary is generally a sniper, but sometimes a fusion. Although to be honest I don't really use either of them very often. I stick with my primary. I can hold my own fairly well :-) I've been playing a similar loadout throughout my PVP career. Regardless of what everyone else is playing. I survived the Felwinter debacle, I've been there through Thorn and back, and I'm still rocking my auto rifle, and still manage to stay positive :-)

I like to run the raid hand cannon with the prison of elders side arm. Also use memory of rhadagast with dark drinker, I have allot of fun running that set up.

Never needed the meta to win that's what makes a true gamer. Only pussies use the meta's to win.

in short, I play to have fun! Doesn't mean I don't want to win, but there are so many different and great weapons on offer now that staying with just one set seems kind of confining really. Got melted in Crucible weeks ago by extremophile - so went and got that AR and that was great. Since then I've also tried both the continental and zero day as well. Got a lingering song in IB and then proceeded to use that for the rest of IB to great effect. Have also picked up a bunch of hopscotch pilgrims with perfect balance, rifled, and third eye - how could you not give that a go? As for specials - yeah, there's a bunch of shotguns on offer (check out the dead orbit last ditch 001 - crazy range and stability) - but a whole bunch of fusion rifles to try out as well - and then there's the tresspasser (trying that out for the first time was a revelation)! The only problem I see is trying to make up my mind as to which weapon to settle on.....

Play with the meta isn't helpful if you aren't good with the meta weapons. I suck with shotguns

Unless some mainstream destiny YouTube makes a random video about a random weapon, not a lot of people would use other weapons than last word-sniper, shotty, hand cannons or any other "sweaty" set up. One of my close friends is really terrible at crucible, so now he depends on the Meta to take him away. I honestly don't think there will be a day where every single gun type, archetype and specific gun would be balanced.

1 ReplyI love my Extremophile. It can be a really deadly weapon. I typically run fusion/hawksaw or fusion/AR. But, lately I've been forced to dust off my shotty and handcannons again because of how much Year 3 maps cater to that playstyle.
