I'm gonna be honest with you all.
Destiny seems to have the 3rd worst reputation in all of gaming. That the fact of the matter, and Bungie knows it. Thanks to all the lies they spewed before destiny launched most gamers either dislike them, don't trust them, or out right hate them.
Destiny 2 is their chance to fix all of that. If they can deliver what they promised in Destiny 1, Bungie will once again be one of the greats in the eyes of everyone (not just us destiny fanboys).
In order to deliver those promises they need to change the engine. Any one who's savvy with game design can tell that it's not fit to handle a true open world at the scale they promised originally.
As a result they probably can't bring our character forward due to conflicts with the new engine (and you bet your ass they aren't gonna bother to remake every single bit of loot from destiny 1 just so we can).
So you're faced with a choice, either the game destiny was meant to be. Or settle for much much less.
(I'm not naive enough to actually think they care about fans, I sure as hell know they care about money though. The Destiny they initially promised would just make so much bank in terms of the silver market and DLC.)

For -blam!-s sake nobody is reading the op. He doesn't want gear brought forward, he just wants the story to be a continuation of the story that we have now and to play it with the same guardian.

Read the new grimore card "The Guardian". We have had a massive affect on this universe and I want our story to continue.

I get that, however even something that seems so simple as transferring our character's player model might prove to be [b][i][u]Impossible[/u][/i][/b] if the game engine is different enough from the current one.

They could easily make you create a character model in the new engine (with a CC that includes all the old options) and have the narrative refer to this newly made character model as the same person from D1. They could also make gear carry over to a new engine if they want, just scan the player‘s D1 profile for any items that have an iteration in D2 and and slap the D2 versions in their inventory within the new engine.

That's assuming they brought back old items in D2.

Agreed. I've read all about the major issues they had with the current engine (which is why fixes and content creation take so long in Destiny), and I really hope they've rebuilt it from the ground up. I'm all for a full reset of everything. They've made far too many mistakes with Destiny 1 (especially with weapons) and I don't want any of that carried over.

I've heard how nightmarish the engine is. A full night just to move one resource node a few feet. If they have to ditch Destiny Y 1-3 to change to an engine that doesn't suck dick, I'm all for it. Besides, it'll make it easier for me to go to PC if that rumor is true.
