The History of The Internet: Or, The Land of Cyber and How It Fell. An Introduction.

Here begins the history of Cyber, as recorded by the Sage. Let he who reads do so with circumspection of mind and heart... For the Salt Lords, discontent to be relegated to the dry confines of print; did cast their eye upon the blissful lands of Cyber. This land was fairest of all, where men did speak their minds freely and without regard to the Great Censor. For the Censor, Supreem Chancellor of the Salt Lords had extended his dominion to print, music, and film. Every medium in which men did dare to think. Long ago, a few beleaguered travellers, out casts from the land of Nerdia, washed up on the shoes of Cyber. This was a land unknown to the Censor or his Sages. These Nerdians were the forefathers of a great race, one that would bring unparalleled bliss to all who thought and reasoned with their minds. Many a weary pilgrim and out cast of the Censors domains did migrate unto the lands of Cyber. Soon, all that the Censor had dominated began to grow stale: no longer did his high domains of print, music, or film retain their souls. The Salt Lords looked on in dismay as Thought left for the fairer shores of Cyber, leaving behined nothing but Opinion in its wake. Just as the body without the soul is dead, so Opinion without Thought is dead also. But Alas! Having dominated Thought for so long, and all its virtues, the Salt Lords devised a foul scheme. Thought, free and unfettered, they knew full well nothing could constrain. But Thought fused to Identity - this was something one could censor. The Censor mused in dark counsel with his Lords: "The inhabitants of Cyber are free, lacking all sensible constraint that is right and proper to man. They are free because their masses lack Identity. But it has long been known as an inviolate maxim that only Thought bound to Identity is worthy of man. Come my Lords! Let us rule once again! Behold, I give you the Face Book! It is like the land of Cyber, for it will be part of Cyber. Few will resist it. For who, may I ask, would wish to ignore the pitiable complaints of past acquaintances? Or look on with a sense of pride, beholding the decay of figure and form in the bodies of those they once deemed their superiors? For more than this, as man looks upon man in prideful judgment, he will have given himself Identity. And Identity, my Lords, Identity cannot exist without the loving guidance of a Censor..." It is said that here the Chancellor smiled, and the Salt Lords smiled. Devious grins that betrayed their small hearts. The Face Book crept into the lands of Cyber unnoticed. Even welcomed. And men, once Freeman, unwittingly fell into the snares of the Censor. But all hope was not lost. For a war that still rages had begun. A Righteous War the victor of which shall determine the fate of Mankind. Even as the Face Book and the Reddit glory in what seems their victory, small fragments of Cyber stand proud and resolute. It is from these bastions - forums the Nerdians call them - that the hope of Cyber lies... Though the walls have fallen, the war is far from over!
