A Week into Rise of Iron, reviews are getting pretty grim.

Not even a full day after Rise of Iron launched, I posted a thread about Early Reviews for Rise of Iron. Normally, the "professional" reviewers and YouTube/Twitch Streamers give a game developer about two weeks or a month of glowing "this developer can do no wrong!!!" reviews before the "new DLC shine" wears off and the flaws start getting reported on. Not so with RoI. Not even a full day had passed and reviewers were already reporting on the flaws and mismanagement about this DLC. Well, now we're almost a full week into Rise of Iron, and the reviews aren't getting any better. Here's a well written review from Steven Strom at Ars Technica about his Rise of Iron Impressions and the thin road to Destiny 2. It's most definitely not a glowing endorsement. But, he does detail the issue many people are having with not only Rise of Iron, but most all of Destiny's DLC's as they have launched, the constant re-skins, small content, but Bungie charging a premium price for sub-par amounts of content. Personally, I couldn't have described this situation better, nor can I find better words than his in his worry about Destiny 2 with the way Destiny has been mismanaged so far. But I would like to hear the Community's thoughts on this. So please, discuss.

  • You know i find it funny how the few people that remain in this area of the forums are people who strongly believe that bungie needs to step up their game and an aggressive group of people who just wont let that message be heard. And the argument from those players seems to be repeatedly along the lines of "Even if it seems kinda broken i'll still pay for it cuz i like it". Lol wanna look for someone to blame for the abundance of in game errors and wtf mechanics? Look in your mirror. Cuz by buying this content you're saying incomplete work is sufficient.

Look, I play a sh*t ton of Destiny and let me tell you that playing it more doesn't make it better. The game has many problems that won't be fixed and more than a few that can't be fixed. RoI doesn't change that. Still gonna' play through the content.

    • All I hate is that after 365-366 light, it all depends on faction rep, vanguard rep, crucible rep, and skeleton keys- alongside a nerfed 3oC... it's a long grind. I'm almost 370 now, thank the lord.

      • Premium price for little content??? Okay let me check this. How many hours of play time will me and my son get out of rise of Iron. We are a week or two in now and we are not yet raid ready on light level so we are not even into any of the end game content yet. Now I paid about 30 bucks for this right? How much would it cost me to take me my wife and son to a movie that last time I checked was no more than two hours of entertainment? Even forget the popcorn. Now you might want to crawl out from under the pile of salt you all live under and enjoy the game or move on.

        • Saw mediocre to poor reviews on IGN and GameSpot today. IGN was surprising considering they have always been positive about Destiny releases. The one thing they all have in common is that the repetitiveness and things to do are pretty much exactly the same as they were before the expansion.
Here's a well written review from Steven Strom at Ars Technica about his Rise of Iron Impressions and the thin road to Destiny 2.
Let's see about that. Cause that was a terrible review. I understand you wanted to link a bad review for your agenda, but couldn't you find an actually well written, intelligent one.
That recycled feeling is ever-present in The Plaguelands, the new in-game region for Rise of Iron. This marks the second time Bungie has bolted a new zone onto the main game’s original four. While The Taken King's Dreadnaught was substantially different from anything else in Destiny—all bones, breathing walls, and slimy indoor cathedrals—The Plaguelands are just an extension of an existing locale. They look nearly identical to what Destiny fans already know as The Cosmodrome—all snow, rusted-out icebreakers, and jagged metal strewn across post-apocalyptic Russia
"They (the Plaguelands) look nearly identical...to the Cosmodrome" Uh, maybe that's because it's ATTACHED TO THE COSMODROME!! It's like saying Downtown looks too similar to South City, even though they're right next to each amd were built at a similar time period.
Felwinter is somewhere between useless and a hassle to visit. Say you want to complete a quest in Rise of Iron, but you also want to buy a new piece of gear. No vendors live in Felwinter, so you'll need to load into the mountain, do your business, load back out, select The Tower, load in to buy your equipment, and load back out again. What a time-consuming slog.
And the Reef was any different? Wanted to get your Dead Orbit Rank up package after completing your Trials card? 1 trip to Reed, 1 to the Tower.
Besides that, the only reason to go back to The Plaguelands is when stories or side missions force you to. It doesn't help that the whole zone is one, great big circle—lending it a very linear feel to boot.
And this differs from any other iteration of Destiny how? Not to mention that every patrol zone in Destiny is a big giant circle, including the Dreadnaught.
Said quest-givers have you squaring off against a new flavor of enemy: the Splicers. Despite the name and a red coat of paint, these are the same alien Fallen players kicked in the teeth across Earth, Venus, and the Moon in Destiny proper—not to mention the miniature House of Wolves expansion in 2015.
And? That's how they're supposed to be! They are the House of Devils who have used SIVA tech to augment themselves, why should they look drastically different or become some new, never-before-seen race?
Tellingly, Lord Saladin—the NPC focal point of the expansion and its lore—has absolutely nothing new to offer, sell, or tell you after Rise of Iron’s two-to-three hours of story quests (even fewer if you sprint). He, like the rest of Rise’s cardboard story, is so thin that he’d probably fall flat if you could tap him on the shoulder.
The people who write these kinds of reviews and support them are, in my opinion, insane - they play the game DLC after DLC and are *shocked* when the same things remain unchanged. This guy is a complete retard and his "review" reeks of "I'm reviewing a game I've barely played over 2 years". It's all superficial areas that he's griping about. He sounds like Shallow Hal: "I don't like her, her second toe is longer than her big toe. Can't do it". Or "She's 10 lbs overweight. Pass." I think you could have done better in your attempt to link the most scathing review you could find. RoI certainly has its issues, but this guy, and you Nox, could've found better ammo for your troll post. It's actually weaker than your attack on the launch queue (of which my retort to you never got a reply. Go figure)

                • My thoughts: Pro's: - A lot of fun and good design. - A lot of "carrots" to keep me interested and playing. Cons: - Way smaller than TTK and not much lore, but I don't really care. - Also I'm let down in how they put the siva clusters in the game compared to calcified fragments. - Exotic weapon quests are too easy.

                • I did not purchase RoI and will not based on all of the reviews I have read in the last eight days. On the subject of re-skinned or recycled content. I find It amusing that most players don't realize or want to admit the majority of the year three exotics were content held back from year two. When Destiny 2 was delayed and RoI was thrown together, the exotics that were supposed to be released on 4/12 were removed from the armory. They were reintroduced as new on 9/20.

                • As an outside observer (360 beta to TTK hardmode player who got a PS4 and doesn't feel like dropping another $60 to keep playing), I have to say that Rise of Iron has a very...Activision/Hollywood feel to it. And that's not a compliment. Besides the rehashing, besides the core gameplay loop remaining largely unchanged, and even besides the price point that I don't really agree with, Rise of Iron comes off as largely generic and uninspired to me in every way possible (music, story, design, etc etc). The magic (literally and figuratively) just doesn't seem to be there with this one, and I think that the magic is what really keeps Destiny going. It's probably just because it was largely unscheduled and supposedly done by a team that's not as involved with Destiny 2 as the others are, but still. I hope anyone that's unsatisfied learns from this (wait for reviews, watch footage before you buy, avoid the "first special snowflake" bait), and I hope that those who are satisfied...well...remain satisfied for as long as possible I guess.

                  • Personally, I have found every DLC well worth my money. Set aside amount of content for a second. It'll be okay, I promise. The amount of play time I get from these, and the amount of time I get to spend enjoying myself in this universe is well worth it to me. I've spent ~$160 on this game to date. Every penny was 1000% worth it TO ME. That's the big qualifier. Obviously other people play and experience the game differently, so OF COURSE there will be people who hate it or say it's a waste or whatever, but the amount of quality enjoyment I have experienced from playing this game is easily worth $160 to me, and so far, RoI hasn't caused me to change my view. I will gladly continue to shell out money for just about anything they release for Destiny at this point, aside from micro transactions which I choose not to utilize based on principle. I understand that content size has upset a lot of people, and justifiably so. I just find it worth it to me because of the cathartic experience.

My only complaint was the single player campaign was shorter than TTK and closer to House of Wolves. Beyond that, I like it. The concept was neat, the gear is alright, I haven't had technical issues, etc. Is it AMAZING? No Was it worth the $30? Probably not... but what games are? Destiny has gained a lot hate lately in general due to technical issues + micro transactions + whatever. It's fun and common to make fun of it. So I'm not surprised there are negative reviews soon. In the end, what's hurting this more is the stark contrast between this and the previous GIANT dlc with TTK

                  • That article makes the author sound like an angry ex-girlfriend. Simply put: mad for the sake of being mad. He feels slighted about previous expansions and is simply looking for a self fulfilling prophecy to dislike this expansion. He misrepresented the Plaguelands in that he said it is recycled. It isn't, not even close. Sure, it is semi circular, you can go to recycled area like the Rocket Yard, The Divide, Dock 13 and most of the Sepiks strike area (I forget the names of those areas). The rest of the actual Plaguelands is fun to explore and the amount of enemies is a great change of pace (a lot more than regular patrols). Archon's Forge is even fantastic, but could be significantly better (and I hope Bungie will provide an update that allows us to make more use of it). Felwinter's Peak is a cool social area and is treated about the same as any other social area by players, which is to say, DestinyLFG.com is better. However, it does have a really cool vibe, beautiful scenery and was incorporated in to some quests that gave you reason to explore. The story line was absolutely amazing, but short and a huge missed opportunity. I really wish it was explored in more detail with a few more cinematics, but that has become typical Destiny (visual story telling as a handoff to Grimoire). As far as the SIVA infected Fallen, yeah, they're pretty much the same. They have different grenades and fire off the occasional axion darts when you kill one and the Splicer Vandals have a very difficult critical hit box to shoot at. I really enjoy the raid and it feels extremely rewarding, in addition to not being overly stressful. The mechanics are super fun and refreshing. Not relying solely on one person to carry a relic is a godsend. In some ways, it is a little too easy, which makes me look forward to Heroic. I look at it as $30 spent on renewing access as opposed to some revitalizing as massive DLC that transforms the game. Was it worth it? So far, I say yes. With upcoming events and potentially unreleased content, I think it will go a long way to affirm that yes. In summary: if you like this game, Rise of Iron is worth it. If you simply are looking for any loose thread that completely unravels the enjoyment, you'll probably find it immediately, in which case you should simply ignore the DLC.

                    • I'm quite enjoying my time in RoI. New scenery is nice and the story cut sections are good to watch. Switched to PS4 over the weekend for a change, and am quite content to potter along through the story mode, bounties and quests, plus crucible drops have been great. Got my first ever Hopscotch with awesome rolls. Been ignoring Youtube and twitch spoilers and plan to take my time. I'm in no rush to get anywhere. Streamers will most likely grind for the next meta shooters then get back to trials carries and the same stuff they did pre-RoI.

                    • Yeah, this expansion isn't terrible, but it definitely is not worth $30. What little story there is is nice, and the PS PvP map is great. But the other 3 PvP maps are either bleh or just horrible. Bungie took the nice, decently fast leveling of the April Update and just... why? The leveling is at a complete crawl, an agonizing, boring crawl. The reskin is also pretty real, albeit I can kind of understand since Rise of Iron was probably using a very small chunk of the team, but how much there is is just... wow. Overall, I'm probably sticking to Overwatch primarily now.

My thoughts? Why do gamers act like a "good game" is something that will appeal to every one and every taste. NO FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT DOES THAT...and no one (but gamers) even EXPECTS that. Destiny is a loot-based game. Loot-based games are about GRINDING. You defeate enemies....to get gear that makes your character more powerful. You then use that gear to defeate more powerful enemies to get even MORE powerful gear. Rinse and Repeat. Bottomline: If you are a person who has a "high need for novelty"; gets bored or restless easily; or prefers to play a story-driven or goal driven RPG like Witcher or Fallout 4...... DON'T PLAY LOOT-BASED GAMES. THEY ARE NOT THE GAME FOR YOU. In loot-based games, the END-GAME IS THE GAME. The story/campaign is just something you play through to GET YOU to the end-game. Which is grinding for the items you want, putting together the character builds that you want....and min-maxing those builds. Then the next expansion drops....the gear is obsoleted...and the PROCESS starts all over. ...and if you can't enjoy that PROCESS. Then don't play these kinds of games. If you can't be happy endlessly chasing after that carrot. GO. PLAY. SOMETHING. ELSE. THIS. GAME. WILL. NEVER. MAKE. YOU. HAPPY. NO. GAME. LIKE. IT. WILL. Ever. What it is SUPPOSED to be, This game is in a very good place right now, and Bungie (for being relatively new to this kind of game design) is making a LOT of very good decisions in managing the game.

                      • I can't provide a review of the game from my personal perspective because I didn't buy it and I don't plan to do so any time soon. However, I have been watching the reviews of the game, have heard several clan members talk about the game's positive notes, and I have weighed those against other written material out there regarding the expansion, including this thread and many others who have posted their first impressions. Taking all of these sources into account, the expansion does not sound like a gamechanger. It simply carries on the same model of TTK, which is questification of exotics, strikes playing a feature role in the endgame phase, the raid is still the penultimate PVE accomplishment (as it should be - not a bad thing), public arenas like CoO or the Archon Forge offer alternate PVE activities which are fun, but hard to access due to the inability to bring in a fireteam of 6 and the apparent lack of people playing it - due to lack of SIVA artifacts (i think. I haven't played so I could be wrong), etc. etc. etc. It's still the same game it was in TTK, just with different window dressing. I don't mean to have all of these bits taken in a negative context, but that could be my Y1 bias shining through. Bottom line is this. If you liked TTK, if you were satisfied with TTK and the changes TTK brought to the game, odds are you are going to enjoy RoI. But if you didn't like what TTK did to the game (essentially, if you didn't like the changes to the game from Y1 to Y2), then RoI really doesn't offer you anything new, doesn't bridge the gap between the founding generation of guardians and the taken tots, and it really doesn't offer you anything to pull you back into the fold. So in that sense, RoI, has done nothing to appeal to disenfranchised Y1 players like myself in order to bring us back into the fold. So I haven't re-upped and I really don't plan on doing so. Things could change. Later updates could revive the old raids. Management could choose to at least reverse their stance against elemental primaries. They could make Y1 gear infusable so Y1 players don't feel like we're being discriminated against when all gear EXCEPT Y1 gear is brought forward. All of these things are still possibilities that COULD bring me back. Its early. We'll see if it happens. But I doubt it. And If Bungie can't sell me on an expansion, they're going to have a much harder time selling me on the sequel to the game considering I'll have had several months to immerse myself in alternatives (skyrim) and my most recent memories of the game weren't exactly fond ones.

Any bad review by a "pro" is for sure not enjoying this game the way I am, it's a great fps, nothing is perfect but this game is close. These game reviewers are of the same ilk as movie critics. I mean they didn't like Deadpool?... Say no more. Good job bungie just stop with the nerfs please.

                        • Destiny fans will enjoy RoI. Non-Destiny fans still won't get why folks keep playing the game. I think I summed it up pretty well. I like RoI, I like the music, the art, the story (though short), and I can't wait to get high enough light for the raid. It is something that I will play 40 hours a week? Nope. I'll get caught up, play the raid a few times, hopefully get a hard clear, finish my book out. But I'll also do other things too. Some people don't like where Destiny has gone, and that's fine. If they are expecting Destiny to become a Destiny/Witcher3 hybrid...well, they are going to be waiting a while. That would be awesome, but not at this point in Destiny's development. Right now, all major resources are making Destiny 2 and polishing up the events. Hopefully some more content can get dropped. That would be cool. Even if it's another 3-4 story missions/quests in the same areas, just doing a little something different would be fine with me.
