ReCore: played by a Metroid Prime fan

Oh boy a new IP, from the makers of MegaMan and Metroid Prime. MP was my sh!T back in the day. First things first. Gotta get this out of the way... There is no intro cinematic or cutscene... Why? Beats me. As a big fan of MP I noticed right away the similar mechanics and design. Samus had 4 different weapons to shoot (not including missiles). Same for this new character... The morphball tracks you need the magnetic upgrade to use, also in this game, tho you need to find a different bot to use them... The level also has the classic Metroid design where you need certain upgrades to explore early unreachable areas. So the mechanics are solid imo. Story? Well I'm only about 5 hours in, but most of the context and plot are revealed by either audio logs you can find and a few short cutscenes. Dialogue with bots has a Starwars feel, your character can understand them, but you the player cannot, so in said cutscenes your character just repeats what the boys say. The story hasn't grabbed my attention yet, but I expect it to pick up the intensity later on, because so far the game hasn't given me any real motivation to complete it other than to sate my own curiosity (which I guess isn't too bad either). It's got that nostalgic feel to it that I was hoping for so that a big plus for me. It's def not a "next gen" game. To me it's just an old style game with some fresh paint on it. We'll see if it was worth $40 soon enough

  • The BAD: I've gotta say the enemies suck and are uninteresting and the story concept is sub par. The map also is a lot of bland walking and no scenery changes at all either sand or crystal caves. The shooting mechanics also aren't my cup of tea with the lock on and color changing. You can climb and pretty much go anywhere... To an extent, the radiation areas seem really random and it kills you way too fast to even escape once you realize you weren't supposed to go there. The GOOD: That being said it plays like an old school game, has a nice nostalgic feel to it, there are a decent amount of similarities with lost planet if you've played those games, and the character control is spot on. The dungeons seem fun and a nice way to mix up game play. Basically if you want to play a game that feels like it was made 10 years ago but looks pretty this is your game. Honestly, could have been great if they had different weapons, more diverse landscapes, cooler enemies imo but what are you gonna do nothing is perfect. I'm enjoying it and that's all that really matters. Also load times make the game feel like you're playing on the original Xbox too haha.

  • I'd say it's a nice break from the same AAA games that are released every year. I didn't encounter any frame rate loss but the loading times can get pretty long. Mostly worth it though imo.

I wish I had a PC or Xbox to try this out, as I love the Metroid Prime series. One small question though, why does the box say Xbox console exclusive when it's available for PC as well?

    • I haven't gotten the chance to play yet but I like how the Grapling hook that you pull cores out with reminds me of the Grapple Beam in Prime 3 that could pull sheilds off. Shame that Nintendo didn't appreciate Metroid and have turned it into a joke

      • Based on the fact that both games have the Metroid Prime director, I'm interested. But I wouldn't get it for Xbox, I'd have to get it for PC, something I don't have. From everything I've seen, it runs horridly on the One because of the engine. Which would ruin the experience, personally. Hopefully he gets to MP4, now that he's done with this.

          • Never got a chance to play the primes, but played the hell out the other entries, besides metroid 2 but who played that. But I didn't like the primes that much though because your beams didn't stack I thought of it as lame, you couldn't have some overpowered beam by the end of the game, well besides the hyper beam but that was restricted

            • I think its a treasure, but a new title should feel fresh. After Prime, it opened up many possibilities. Hopefully this and other new titles from the dev team show + promise.

            • You're right about the nostalgia feel and how it handle like metroid prime. I like the feel of it though, it's very relaxing, not overly difficult to pick up (I'll probably have the wife play it too). The dungeons are what I wanted from Destinys raids b4 the game came out so I'm immensely satisfied and look forward to completing more of them. Bottom line I really dig the game and will probably play it twice or three times since I'm an old school kind of gamer and I enjoy a good single player campaign.

                  • Yeah, I'm definitely enjoying this game as well.. just wish I could put a waypoint on the map! And that I could have a location icon for my corebot: sometimes, Mack will be fighting and I won't know where he is...

                    • For $40 it is quite a steal. I'm having a lot of fun with it. It's nothing revolutionary or industry breaking, but it is a very solid game. Just fun.
