When I first bought Destiny it was on a 360 using disk media, when I bought a XB1 it also came with Destiny on a disk, so for the last two years l always need to have the disk in to play. Situations have changed (toddler grandson around) and it will now be better if switch to a digital license since I am concerned about the disk getting scratched/lost by grandson wanting to watch Barney.
I am thinking that if I purchase the $39 pack on the Xbox store this might be a solution but I do not want to accidentally blow anything away on characters/experience if it re-downloads the game (preferably it would recognize the current install and not even download anything until RoI, saving me GB's of ISP cap data).
Is this the best way to convert over or is there a better way? Suggestions?

I had the same issue. I hated switching discs. I purchase the collection to get the digital license. You don't even have to download the full game. It just downloads the license. Well worth it.

Your guardians and items will be there, they are on the Destiny servers not on your game disc.
