I need computer help
*A Wild Gringo has appeared*
Hola Offtopic. I am not one to easily admit my faults. That being said, I would much rather admit them to the anonymous Offtopic than my friends. With that being said: I am not very good with computers. Simple as that. Now I bought a relatively cheap pc a little while ago. Sort of recently. It was about $300 and just for simple shit. As I said, I am not good with computers so I leave my gaming and whatnot to the consuls. I digress. It is a Dell that runs on Intel (no clue if that means anything) and has Windows 10. My problem is that this goddamn thing has no memory storage whatsoever. I am constantly running on its RAM capacity. I have done everything virtually possible to clear space. I have cleared any extra space 3 fold. There just isn't enough and I need to expand it. My question to you guys is: what can I buy to expand memory? I am not looking for anything amazing for gaming pc's or anything like that, I just want something reasonable, cheap, and will let me have enough space to download simple damn updates. Help me #Offtopic, you're my only hope.

  • You're sort of talking two different things. It sounds like you're running out of memory (ram) and trying to resolve the problem by deleting stuff off the hard drive. They are two different things. To free up ram and make your applications run smoother you don't need to uninstall anything, you need to close any applications you have running in the background. If you have a lot of tabs open in your browser that will suck up a lot of memory. If your hard disk is full that can slow your computer down as well but it doesn't sound like that's the case. You need to purchase more memory(ram) though to increase your performance. For your needs 4gb is probably enough, but 6gb would be great. The problem your most likely to run into though is you're likely running Windows 32bit. Which has a max usable amount of memory at 4gb. Your license you currently own will allow you to install 64bit for free but that is likely beyond your capabilities. If you can tell me your system specs, or give me your Dell service tag so I can look them up, I can give you a better idea of what you need to do. But probably your best bet is to google "crucial memory finder" and use that tool to select your system which will tell you what memory you need to buy, or use their system scanner. Memory is very cheap and easy to install and would be a great way to help you dive into the PC world.

I'm slightly confused. You talk about RAM (short term memory), but given the problem you're describing, I think you're issue is hard drive storage (long term memory). Do you know the storage capacity of your hard drive?

  • You can buy more RAM, it isn't cheap, but sounds like you need it. Look up a tutorial to install it into your motherboard, or if you don't trudt yourself with that, take it to a store or something and they will do it.
