Do you need to deal a lot of damage? Use a sniper rifle. You can be further away and deal even more damage.
Do you need to fight in close quarters? Use a sword. You get some damage resistance to protect you.
Do you need a way to respond to an enemy that got too close? By the time you can slowly pull out your shotgun, you could've jumped away. Also, that's what a sidearm should be meant for.
Are you stuck in a small room with a bunch of majors and no heavy ammo? I'd still prefer a fusion rifle so I can strafe better, keep some more distance, have more ammo, reload more quickly, etc.
So tell me, why is it that there doesn't seem to be a situation in PvE when a shotgun would be the most useful choice?
Edit: In case anyone wanted to know, here are some damage numbers I calculated a few months ago. I used an old HoW damage chart and had to factor in changes to weapon damage, perk effects, etc. so it's not incredibly accurate. Both are assuming all shots were precision hits against ultras and there are 17 rounds total in the mag and reserve.
31110 for Her Benevolence at 331 attack with clown cartridge (if it procs each time)
29767 for Felwinter's Lie at 365 attack with aggressive ballistics and final round
Notice how Her Benevolence deals a bit more damage per inventory than Felwinter's Lie, even though Felwinter's Lie has a higher attack. If clown cartridge didn't consistently activate and their attacks were equal, it would probably still be pretty close.

Edited by Maestro25: 9/1/2016 7:08:35 AMEvery person that doesn't use Hitchhiker FR4 is a dum dum. Max impact, takes out most enemies in one blast, and most importantly, doesn't waste your ammo like shotguns do. Solid range so you don't have to be touching an enemy just for the shot to connect.

Next big thing with final round damage, and full auto. Void. I have lots of fun. If I keep that shotty empty with backup plans to reload it. I can kill anything close to me in 1-2 shots granted the void burn event perk. Without maybe 1-3 kills per shot. Keep in mind I'm firing 1 shot extra extra damag

When its favored special damage or primary damage (universal remote )

Boom?

Shottys will always be the cqc go to weapon, nerfs and all.

It benefits my style of play. I don't really care for sidearms lack of power or fusion rifle charge times.

It's fun using shotguns in pve.

6 RepliesYour assuming that a PVP shotgun is good in PVE...Not so. For PVE you want different types with different perks. 1. Use either the mid or low impact shotgun types WITH FULL AUTO. Full auto is a must. For PVP high impact shotguns with full auto are useless but in PVE you can clear out a group of trash mobs or take down a major up close (and far more fun than sniping from across the room). Ask anybody with a Stolen Will shotgun that has full auto how fast they can take down any major. 2. Have Army of One/Grenadier, Crowd Control and any reload or stability perk. Again in PVP it's all about range. Range in PVE isn't nearly as important. 3. Learn when to go full Leroy Jenkins and when to play smart and wait. Sniping is safe and easy but not that engaging. High damage and low risk. Shotgun is far more aggressive and more dangerous. But can be rewarding when you can clear out a room far faster than you could ever hope to do with a sniper. 4. Try and have the same gun perks on different elemental guns. Now that the strikes have burns it's smart to have the same type of gun with different burns. But this can only be achieved by luck with RNG. So you have to play ALOT and pay more attention to the guns you get from engrams and packages that you would normally discard.

It's super fun. Hiding behind a rock all the way across the map is boring. I find PvE pretty boring. A big solution tends to be "hide and snipe" or "jump around in circles until your health comes back". You try that crap in PvP and you get crushed. I'm not skilled in PvP. I play to have fun. So if I have to play PvE to unlock something then I'm rolling with a shotgun to stick in a knights face or a sidearm to blast a clip as fast as possible. I'm not hiding and waiting in an already boring playmode. This is the reason why I play with them. If PvE is your thing then have fun. Enjoy he game however you want. No criticism against anyone.

5 RepliesI only use Stolen Will with full auto in PvE. Try it if you have one.

Taking down Majors with a headshot.

Scout+shotgun+sword is great in CoO, but that's just about it
-
They're good for prison of elders until boss or smaller spaces on some levels/strikes however I prefer snipers 98% of the time
-
I use my shotgun in pve. I run and gun a lot in pve and love it. Same as pvp. I don't have many sniper kills in pvp

1 ReplyI believe using Felwinters as your test is not the best choice due to its slow fire rate, but other than that, totally agree with you, though I still use pre April Burden of Proof in pve.

Always use shotguns LOVE EM

1 ReplyI used a shotgun all the time in Y1 for VOG, but not much else. They were great for shielded minotaurs and other enemies. I didn't play PVP in Y1, so I can't comment how they performed there. More recent VOG runs have shown that the shotgun does not have nearly the power it once had. Thanks Bungie. I found myself using high impact fusion rifles with more success in similar circumstances. Basically, the shotgun has become even more of a niche weapon than it was. PVP is really the only arena where shotguns can be used with "somewhat" consistent results. Although sometimes it doesn't work as well as it should there either. In my opinion, this is one more example of Bungie tweaking a weapon for PVP and ruining it for PVE.

2 RepliesBurden of Proof pre April update roll was perfect for it. I used Hung Jury pre April update a lot with a exotic sword. It worked well together, but most people snipe because of dps and consistency.

1 ReplyEdited by SwedishBass: 8/29/2016 9:49:10 AMThere pretty much is none. Since patch 2.0 when they nerfed shotgun damage with 45%, all they are good for is PvP and the occasional "Specialised Rampage" bounty. Then they were nerfed three more times, for which we got a 0.05 increase in the damage multiplier. We need the full, HoW-era damage and range in PvE back. The nerf in the December patch was unnecessary and uncalled for.

Here is what I use in pve for shotguns. NL Shadow and Chaperone. It's a good combo of you are running just primary.

1 ReplyBecause sometimes you don't get to pick your engagement range, and snipers are useless when the enemy is 10 feet in front of you.
