Loot based games need powerful items.

I think the root of my complaint comes down to a difference of opinion on what Destiny is. I see Destiny as a PVE loot-based game which has some PVP in it. Bungie sees it as a PVP game with some PVE in it. Here's the thing. When I play loot-based games, I am looking coming back to it again and again because I am hoping to get something awesome that takes my character to the next level. In year 1, this was possible in Destiny. I played a lot, and was rewarded with a Fatebringer and Gally among other things. Now all the weapons are the same in power with minor differences caused by the perks. However when a perk works out to be good, it gets nerfed anyway. I am not sure Bungie grasps the concept of "loot-based" at this point. I don't mind seeing things rebalanced for PVP, but the PVE versions of the weapons should be left alone. Why nerf the Gally when it was hard to get? Once you get that awesome new weapon it's fun to go ruin enemies with it. That's what loot-based games are all about. In year 1 you could get a new item and it was special in some way. Now it's all about whether it looks good on your character because the stats don't matter. I really hope that going forward Bungie will catch on that this is not the experience that MMO players look for, and makes an adjustment.

  • There used to be very powerful weapons........playing destiny in the first few months felt GODLY....our supers, our guns that had lots of power and range to keep us out of harms way.....but then the PvP noobs and YouTube streamer crybabies started getting noticed and everything that we loved for being powerful went to the toilet, and continues circling the drain...

  • Yep. A legendary auto rifle should never be better than an exotic auto rifle of the same archetype.

  • I strongly dislike bungie's pvp focus as it is an obvious show of cowardice in response to the no story or content pve droughts with the bugs/glitches/exploits (pushing VoG bosses off the edge of arena). They went back to pvp because it is there cheap familiar comfort zone and I dislike that anti-innovation/ regression that represents. We have absolutely no need for another competitive shooter however a cooperative shooter done well is sorely needed atm.

Well if it makes anyone feel better there is a pulse rifle from the upcoming raid that, when you get precision kills, it cause minature SIVA looking seeds to home into nearby opponents, that could be OP.

    • No weapons in Y1 felt "really powerful" that is just the nostalgia talking. Admittedly Vex BEFORE it got nerfed and when it was the best option for getting through CE at a low level was kinda powerful - but as soon as you hit level parity that went away. BOTH PvE and PvP have improved drastically over the course of the game so far. Weapon diversity is excellent now, and yes, I do feel damn powerful when I encounter lower level enemies. They can barely scratch you unless they are in great numbers. Of course, if all you play is endgame then you will never encounter weak enemies.

            • Yes. The first 2 raids had weapons that were worth the 2 - 3 hours it takes to run a raid. HoW kinda sucked, but I still played the shit out of it and enjoyed using the largest variety of gear and weapons Destiny ever had. In TTK, they decided nothing should feel rewarding and kings fall/ nightfalls left 99% of Y1 players feeling like they just wasted their time after any PVE.

              • As often as I've seen this type of post, it rings true now more than ever, fate-bringer was special, I challenge anyone to list a PVE weapon that feels as good as it did (does)

                • Totally agree. PvP should not be the driving force of change in the game or else we are just going to end up with another CoD, where the PvE doesn't matter in the slightest. Some of the Exotics that force players into the PvP arena are really annoying. Chaperone for example, or the Exotic Class items. I don't really enjoy PvP. I can do it just fine, but I get no joy from it. I enjoy a good campaign, co-operating with my friends towards a shared goal. Now though, there is no reason to bother playing as much because the weapons don't feel strong, or I have to play PvP to get them. I'm excited for RoI because it looks like they put a good bit of effort into the PvE, and I hope it is true. I want to see the focus on PvE increase, and stop forcing us into the PvP arena.

                • From the replies I've gotten overnight it looks like I'm not alone. I would love to see Destiny 2 go back it roots and be a game where getting loot is rewarding for more reasons that light level. Hopefully Bungie notices the post.

                  • Yes, as a long time fan of Borderlands, I also think that this game needs more unique guns, they don't all have to be the ultimate gun, but just make them do different things and look cool while doing it. ( Yes, I know. I am kind of hopin to Destiny to take some of the loot mechanics from Borderlands, but leave behind the unbalance of it.) But I realize that some guns could be ridiculous in crucible, so maybe just make them a new rarity that can't be used in crucible? Tell me what you think about this.

                    • exotics are still high-end rewards we can get. I think the bigger problem is that they don't feel like they're exotic most of the time. One of the changes that might fix this problem is allowing guardians to equip multiple exotics (PvE only obviously) but you wouldn't be able to equip just a full set of exotics. Talking with some friends we agreed on 2 systems that could help level it out. Raid Reward system: Each raid you complete permanently unlocks the ability to equip another exotic to your total list. IE finishing both Atheon and Oryx would allow for 2 additional exotics to be equipped, while say you only finished Atheon you only get 1 additional exotic. Raids would have to be completed on hard mode in their entirety, no starting from the final checkpoint and just unlocking it immediately. In addition, if this is too easy, it could be set that you have to complete the raid a certain number of times on hard. Exotic tier system: Each exotic has a certain number of value points assigned to it. Like in recent CoD games with the create a class points system, exotics could be equipped so that their total value points dont exceed a set amount. IE you can't equip all top tier exotics and dominate but you could equip a large number of low tier exotics. (This is just a thought and opinion) It just always seemed off that we're meant to protect the light and we have full arsenals of god-like weapons and we can't equip more that one at a time.

                    • Your answer to items being powerful, like G-horn, is because the community was shitty toward people that didn't have it. If you wanted to raid during dark below and didn't have several friends to join groups with, good luck getting into a competent group without one. It was crap. Bungie fixed it. Not because it was grossly OP, which it kinda was compared to pretty much anything, but the community did it to itself.

                      • My interest in the game dropped to near zero, once i had everything i wanted in the game. I had been involved pretty heavily in pvp as well and my interest in this game mode dropped off a cliff in tandem. I think the most accurate criticism of Destiny ever year 1 was the game by itself might not have been enough to keep you interested, once you had ALL the gear. Or at least all of the gear you could want. I understand not everyone may hold this point of view, but i can tell you that my friends list sure did. I am an old school loot/gear whore, admittedly, but, having something interesting to do with acquired gear is something i hope D2 takes into account. In my view Destiny 2 should look to make exotics RARE. Aka, nightfall/raids etc. you COULD receive exotic gear but seldom do. Xur should no longer sell the best gear in the game. Open world pvp. Provide a zone/planet where players can engage in pvp style combat against one another and give them strong incentive/lore to do so. Get people rabid in the pursuit of gear, give them something fun to do with it, something beyond.. doing the stuff you did over and over to accumulate the gear that is.

                          • I have thousands of kills with every gun from Crota and VoG i have less than a 100 with every Oryx raid gun combined that's says a lot about how bad these guns are, making this raid a waste of time Bungie needs to figure out whether they want to make Destiny or the next call of duty

                            • I agree, but they cant be overpowered like gjallarhorn, fatebring, vision. Look at guns like zhalo, black spindle, plan C, multi-tool, suros, red death, I mean those are some SOLID exotics but because of dumbass Xur, three of coins, and quests there was barely any grind for them, everyone had one within weeks, or until xur sold them. I mean it took me all of year one to get 4th horseman, it sucks but i still wanted it, TAKE OUT XUR AND THREE OF COINS or at least make it so he doesn't sell exotics, and screw three of coins, they break the looting system, getting a straight up exotic thing from a reward was SO hyped, now its like cool, engram, cool, shard/infusion(which takes a shard?) we need more work horse, cool, solid exotics like these, that stand out compared to legendaries but are not overpowered like Y1 gjallarhorn/icebreaker, and please please please bungie re-tune Xur, and delete 3 of coins forever

                              • I've long thought that Bungie marrying pvp and pve like that was a mistake. It makes pvp balancing a nightmare and it means you can't have anything really cool for pve because if you did, it would make pvp even more unbalanced.

                              • I’m a Y2 player, so can’t comment on the merits of Y1, but aren’t the Spindle, Sleeper, ToM and the 3 exotic swords Y2 exclusives? Do you not use these weapons? I’m surprised as they offer something unique and are pretty much PvE orientated You mention Fatebringer and Gally amongst others from Y1. So what were the others? I see 6 x Y2 quest/activity acquired weapons that you cannot say are not a cut above the rest. Or is it that the cut above isn’t a ridiculous cut above so as to be, possibly, OP and makes the PvE stupidly easy?
