I've been giving some thought lately to SRL and I have a few ideas on how to better implement it within the framework of the game as a whole. One of the things that Bungie likes to do (and often does well) is utilize existing assets in new and innovative ways, and I can't help but feel they are missing an opportunity with SRL. The event was fun and different, however it lacked enough tracks to be an enduring event in it's debut form. As Bungie has themselves acknowledged, it also left some players in the lurch, namely those who didn't want to race, but would otherwise participate. Here's how I would tweak the event for maximum player satisfaction (evil grin). You load up Destiny and the director appears. You select SRL from the director (in a manner identical to how we currently select crucible or vanguard playlist). You then choose to be a racer or a spectator. Racers choose between a standard race (SRL v1.0) or spectator interactive race. Standard races take place on dedicated tracks like those in the first SRL event, whereas the interactive races utilize the circular patrol paths that already exist on The Moon, Mars and Venus. Nothing more needs to be said about the standard race, it might get a new track occasionally but is otherwise an expansion of the first SRL. The interactive race needs only a brief description. It takes place in a public space. The racers are no longer immune to damage from other players (evil grin). They can be shot, grenaded, supered, whatever,..if it works in pve or pvp it works here, they're just moving faster. The racers ALSO have their weapons, supers and abilities. The spectators spawn in ahead of the racers, hop on their sparrows and head off to their favorite place to wreak havoc and mayhem. The race begins just like standard srl with the starting zone being the normal spawn locations for patrol. Shortly out of the gate, the safe zone ends and players are vulnerable. As you race along, you battle the other racers, lopping grenades at each other, ramming each other and generally doing whatever it takes to get ahead, all the while being exposed to snipers rooting for one of your competitors. As a competitor, you choose anywhere along the track (the existing patrol roads) and set up shop sniping away at racers you don't like, or you can hunt other spectators trying to snipe your champion! We could add some additional flavor by allowing the faction sponsorship of racers. Then, dead orbit could send out snipers to hunt down New Monarchy racers etc etc (bounty options galore). Of course, FWC would have the sexiest sleds just like they have the sexiest ships and so on (personal opinion). You could have faction racing bounties in addition to the srl bounties we've already seen. You could also do a limited time triathlon event in the cosmodrome where the patrol path traverses buildings and other areas where sparrows cannot easily go. The public spaces would still have enemies battling just like they do on patrol. Imagine being on patrol, defending a warsat and a wave of racers thunders by, a few good samaritans lobbing nades at the fallen captains as they pass. Since we are next gen only going forward the maximum number of players in a public space should be able to increase significantly, allowing for such an interactive experience. There is a great deal of opportunity here, if Bungie chooses to seize it!
