Couldn't play with my son as well in same household, after trying different suggestions from others with no success we tried one last thing and it works! We were both using Lan connections so I had him switch to our wifi instead while I kept it Lan & it finally works. So basically if you are both on the same network one needs to be connected using wifi & the other to the wall (lan). I hope this helps cuz I know firsthand how frustrating it is :)
